Leathernecks Drop Match to Milwaukee

Western falls in three sets to the Panthers

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. – The Western Illinois volleyball team wrapped up play at the Pepsi Panther Invitational Saturday (Aug. 27) taking on host Milwaukee. The Panthers took a 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-12) decision over the Leathernecks to move to 3-0 on the season while Western falls to 0-3.

"We struggled this weekend to find consistency. As we get into the gym this week we need to keep working on finding our confidence and being able to retain and apply information," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "As a young team focusing on the details will be key for us this season. We saw some positive things this weekend and are anxious to get back to work on Monday."

Western found themselves down 10-7 in the first set before a 4-0 surge led by back-to-back kills from Melanie Patenaude quickly put the Leathernecks up 11-10. Both sides kept it close with Milwaukee holding a slight 15-13 edge heading into the first timeout.

With the match tied at 19-19, Milwaukee charged ahead with a late run and the Leathernecks could not respond as the Panthers took set one 25-20.

In set two, WIU got on the board first with two quick points but Milwaukee went on a run to jump ahead 8-4. Western found its momentum late in the match when down 23-13, Shalyn Greenhaw struck with a kill then teamed up with Lexi Kolschefski for a combination block. The late push was not enough as the Panthers won set two 25-14.

The Leathernecks kept things close for the first part of set three as Patenaude, Emilee Dechant and Greenhaw all contributed with early kills. Milwaukee then opened up a 12-5 lead which Greenhaw countered with two kills and a service ace to bring the Leathernecks within four, 12-8. The Panthers responded with a 5-0 run and picked up the third set victory, 25-12.

For the third straight match, Greenhaw led the team in kills with 10. Abby Skryd dished out 15 assists while Greenhaw also picked up six digs. Kolschefski was solid defensively, leading the Leathernecks with five blocks. Freshman Hannah Walker had two service aces.

The Purple and Gold travel to Iowa City next weekend for the Iowa Tournament hosted by the Hawkeyes. Western takes on Iowa, Oakland and Butler over two days of competition (Sept. 2-3).
