Leathernecks Edged by Bison, 7-4

Hailey Duwa and Rachel Beatty hit back-to-back home runs in the loss

FARGO, N.D. – The Western Illinois softball team went head-to-head with North Dakota State on Sunday (April 24) in the final game of the three-game series. The Leathernecks scored two of their four runs in the top of the seventh inning, but their rally was not enough as they fell by a score of 7-2. With the loss, Western falls to 11-31 (4-8 Summit League) on the season.

Both sides were held scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when NDSU hit an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. In the top of the fourth, Hailey Duwa sailed her first career home run over the right field fence with two outs to tie the game up at 1-1. The next at bat, Rachel Beatty hit her third home run of the season to right center to give the Leathernecks a 2-1 lead.

Home runs came back to haunt Western as the Bison hit one in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to take a 7-2 lead.

Western rallied in the top of seventh when Beatty hit a leadoff single to left field, her second hit of the day. Beatty then worked her way to second following a sacrifice bunt from Nina Maggio and then advanced to third on an illegal pitch. Holly Hoelting then drew a one-out walk to bring on Amanda Manton to pinch run for her. The next at bat, Karissa Kouchis launched her second hit of the day to left field to score Beatty and cut the deficit to four runs. The rally continued when Tierney Bottino hit a single to left field to score Manton from second base. Unfortunately, the rally would be cut short as the Bison held on to win by a final score of 7-4.

Beatty was two-for-two on the day with a walk and an RBI. Kouchis was two-for-four and an RBI. Duwa went one-for-two with a walk and an RBI.

Kacyee Hart got the nod in the circle for the second consecutive game. The senior pitched one and a half innings and only gave up two hits and no earned runs. Emily Ira surrendered five hits and five earned runs in two and a half innings of work. Megan Lotarski pitched two complete innings of relief, giving up two earned runs off of three hits.

The Purple and Gold will travel to IUPUI next weekend (April 29-30) for a three-game series. A doubleheader will take place on Friday at noon and 2:00 p.m. A single game will take place Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
