Rally Comes Up Short in Series Finale

Leatherneck pitchers strike out nine Razorbacks in loss

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Western Illinois brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning against the 14th-ranked Arkansas Razorbacks, but a flyball ended the game in a 3-0 decision on Sunday afternoon (March 13).

Arkansas (12-3 overall) scored all three of its runs on a two-out hit, starting in the first inning. UA took advantage of a throwing error, wild pitch and two-out single to take an early 1-0 lead.

The Razorbacks threatened in the third after consecutive walks with one out, but Ian Koch was able to induce a 4-3 inning-ending double play. In the fourth, UA had consecutive singles to put runners on the corners but Koch battled back with a strikeout and line drive putout in left field to stop the scoring threat again.

In the fifth, Arkansas finally got through with two outs with Luke Bonfield's two-run double on a 2-2 pitch with two outs extending the lead to 3-0. Nick Milligan entered the game and got a lineout to end the frame. The Razorbacks used a single and hit batter to start the sixth inning, but Milligan struck out the side.

Western threatened with two outs in the fifth on a two-out error and hit batter but Arkansas got a groundout to end the frame. Mark Garton walked to start the seventh, and went to second when Nick Schrader was robbed of a base hit on a sliding stop, but a strikeout again ended Western's chance at scoring.

During the ninth inning, Colton Pogue singled with one out. Two batters later he stole second base and Connor Currier drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch. Schrader stepped in against Doug Willey. The freshman fouled off five pitches while facing a two-strike count before Arkansas decided to make a pitching change.

Facing the left-handed throwing Jordan Rodriguez, Schrader fouled off a 1-2 pitch before a flyball to right ended the game.

Western's other hit came in the fourth inning, a leadoff single by Adam McGinnis. The Leathernecks (2-11 overall) drew three walks and two hit by pitches, leaving six on base in the game.

Koch (0-2) was charged for three runs (two earned) on five hits in 4.2 innings. The freshman fanned a season-high five batters. Milligan (1.1 IP), Robert Nunn (1.0) and Nate Westfahl (1.0) gave up one hit, one walk and struck out four down the stretch.

Barrett Loseke (1-0) struck out four in four innings of work. Rodriguez, the sixth Razorback pitcher, got the final out for his first save of the year.

Western begins a two-game midweek series at (current ranking) #12 Missouri State. First pitch on Tuesday (March 15) is scheduled for 3 p.m.
