Leathernecks fall 5-3

AUBURN, Ala. – The Western Illinois softball team completed tournament play at the Tiger Invitational with a game against Boston College on Sunday (Feb. 28). The Leathernecks got on the board first, but could not hold on to the lead as they dropped the game by a score of 5-3 to move to 3-10 on the season.

Payton Abbott was the first Leatherneck to reach base in the top of the second inning as she drew a walk. Kelsey Marlow then launched a single through the left side and Tierney Bottino reached first safely on a bunt to get the bases loaded for Sidney Bottino. S. Bottino battled at the plate and grounded out to second base, but Abbott was able to score and the Leathernecks took a 1-0 lead.

Boston College responded in the bottom of the third to tie the game up at 1-1. In the next inning, Tatiana Cortez hit a three-run home run to extend the Eagles' lead to 4-1.

Western answered back in the top of the fifth as Karissa Kouchis hit a leadoff single to left field and advanced to second off a sacrifice bunt from Nina Maggio. Aly Compton walked at the next at bat and Holly Hoelting reached on a fielder's choice that forced Kouchis out at third base. With runners on first and third, Abbott reached first on an error that sent Compton home. The next at bat, Marlow hit her second base hit of the game, an RBI single through the left side to score Hoelting. At the conclusion of the top of the fifth inning, the Leathernecks brought the score within one, 4-3.

The Eagles would score one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning and Western was unable to respond and fell by a score of 5-3. Kacyee Hart pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing five runs off of five hits. Emily Ira came in for relief, getting the two final outs in the bottom of the sixth and struck out one batter. Marlow led the team with two hits and one RBI.

The Leathernecks will look to bounce back next weekend at the Miami Invitational in Oxford, Ohio on March 5-6. Western will take on Canisius and Miami of Ohio twice during the two-day tournament. Action begins Saturday morning at 10 a.m. CT.
