MACOMB, Ill. –
The women's basketball team continued its perfect home record with a 91-77 win over in-state foe Bradley on Monday (Dec. 5).

The Leathernecks were led by Emily Clemens' 23 points, eight assists and five steals. Morgan Blumer also had a 20-plus point performance, with 22 points and five rebounds.

"I thought it was a really nice win, and we really take some pride in how we compete against other teams in Illinois," said head coach JD Gravina. "It was a nice win and I thought our team played the way we wanted to play. We had 19 assists on 12 turnovers and we forced them to commit 18 turnovers. Even though we won the turnover battle by six, we still out-rebounded them by 17, and that's big for our program. It was good to be back from a successful road trip and to be back in Western Hall."

Western Illinois jumped out to a 10-1 lead in the early minute of the game, but the Braves pulled it to within two points at the 1:39 mark in the first quarter. The Leathernecks sustained a 22-16 lead at the end of the first quarter, and eventually went on a 16-5 run to cap off the first half with a 48-34 lead.

A pair of Morgan Blumer 3-pointers gave Western a 54-38 lead with 6:22 to go in the third. Western then jumped out to a 64-46 lead after Clemens knocked down a pair of transition threes with 2:13 to go in the third quarter.

Entering the fourth quarter, the Bradley Braves cut their deficit to 15 with 8:21 to go, and then went on a 10-4 spurt to cut Western's lead to eight at the 4:27 mark. The Leathernecks, however, withstood Bradley's momentum and a pair of Blumer and-1's sealed the game with under a minute to play. From there, Western was able to come away with the 14-point win.

Clemens' 23 points continues her double-digit scoring streak to nine games for the 2016-17 season.

"I'm definitely impressed with her [Clemens]. She had a great season last year, and I knew she could be that type of player for us. With the opportunities she's had this season, she's going to have the ball in her hands a lot more and be the person that can make things happen" said Gravina. "She's an efficient player and can create things for other players. She's not just a scorer, but one of the national leaders in assists, and she fits our style perfectly."

Three other Leathernecks reached double figures in scoring in Blumer (22), Farrow (12) and Higginbotham (10). Mallory Boyle was one basket shy of recording a double-double, with eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Bradley also had four in double figures, as Chelsea Brackmann had a team-high 19 points, followed by Vanessa Markert (17), Madison Dellamuth (14) and Anneke Schlueter (10).

"I think that we need to keep that defensive intensity at a ten," said Gravina. "Offensively, we need to continue that aggressiveness along with sharing the ball. I thought we did well in transition. We're a good transition team, so it's important for us to pick that up."

The Leathernecks return to action two days later, as they take on Graceland University this Wednesday (Dec. 7) at 7 p.m. The game is scheduled to air live on ESPN3 and fans can also listen live on the Leatherneck Sports Network.
