Volleyball Falls to Denver Sunday Afternoon

Leathernecks battle but fall in three sets

DENVER, Colo. – The Leatherneck volleyball team faced Summit League foe Denver on the road Sunday (Oct. 9) where they fell 3-0. With the defeat, Western falls to 4-19 on the season with a 1-6 mark in league play. The Pioneers improved to 12-5 overall (4-1 SL).

"We did a better job getting our serve receive back on point, which allowed us to do some more things offensively," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "Denver is a good team and we saw some really good moments from our kids. We look forward to getting back in the gym this week as we prepare for SDSU at home."

In the opening set, Western Illinois kept things close until Denver used a 6-0 run to lead 16-7. Following a timeout, Emilee Dechant and Claire Grove came up with kills to try and get Western's momentum going, but the Pioneers scored five straight points to extend their lead to 22-9. The Leathernecks would not back down, as they scored three straight points off of kills from Shiah Sanders and Melanie Patenaude. Denver was able to score the final set points to take set one, 25-13.

Both sides exchanged points back and forth in the opening portion of the second set. Consecutive kills from Patenaude gave Western its first lead of the afternoon, 7-6. The Leathernecks built a slight 11-9 lead following two kills from Shalyn Greenhaw. With the Leathernecks up 14-12, the Pioneers took over with a 7-0 run to lead by five, 19-14. Another 4-0 run late in the set would extend Denver's lead to 24-16. After a kill from Grove, Denver hammered down the set point for a 25-17 victory.

Western led 6-5 early on in set three. The Leathernecks offensive attack heated up as they used a 7-2 run to lead 13-9. The spurt was highlighted by kills from Riley Schumacher, Sanders, Greenhaw, Patenaude and Lexi Kolschefski. Denver began to dwindle the Leathernecks' lead to force a timeout. With the set tied at 17-17, the Pioneers pulled away with a 6-0 run to lead 23-17. Grove hammered down consecutive kills to try and keep Western alive, but it wasn't enough as DU claimed set three 25-19.

Greenhaw led Western offensively with 10 kills, followed by Grove who had eight. Kaili Simmons had 12 digs, while Abby Skryd and Hannah Walker dished out 18 and 13 assists, respectively.

The Purple and Gold have a one week hiatus from competition. They wrap up the first portion of league play on Sunday, Oct. 16 at home against South Dakota State. First serve is set for 1 p.m. inside Western Hall.
