Western Illinois Drops 2-0 Match At IUPUI

The Leathernecks fell 2-0 on the road to the Jaguars.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.- The Fighting Leatherneck women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 contest on the road at IUPUI after a pair of second-half goals from the Jaguars on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23).

"We deserved two penalty kicks, but weren't able to get either one. IUPUI came into the match with a lot of energy and really went at it. I thought our backline did well but we wore out in the second half," said Director of Soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "We battled the whole way and have been improving, but we just couldn't get the reward for our improvement today."

The first half saw multiple close chances on both ends, as Nicole Beer had her header shot saved in the 23rd minute, followed by an IUPUI shot hitting the crossbar in the 43rd minute. The Jaguars struck first in the 53rd minute, when Tori Minnich scored from 14 yards out to go up 1-0 in the match. Western then fell behind 2-0 in the 73rd minute off a 7-yard goal inside the box by IUPUI's Maryna Clark.

Madeline Edwards recorded two shots with one on goal, while Nicole Beer recorded two shots with a team-high two on goal. Both Ashley Kuhlmann and Stacie Wolfgram also added a shot each in the match. In goal, Jennifer Currie recorded five saves in 90 minutes of play.

Overall, the Leathernecks (4-10-2 overall, 2-4 Summit League) were outshot 15-6 by the Jaguars. IUPUI (8-6-3, 2-2-2) also finished with a 7-3 shot-on-goal advantage.

Western Illinois returns home next Sunday, Oct. 30 for its final regular season match against Oral Roberts. The match will be streamed through Fighting Leatherneck All-Access and will also feature Senior Day for women's soccer senior Brianna Hughes
