MACOMB, Ill. –
A 1-0 loss in double-overtime to Oral Roberts at John MacKenzie Alumni Field Sunday (Oct. 30) concluded the Western Illinois women's soccer team's 2016 season.

The match also marked Senior Day for Western Illinois forward Brianna Hughes, who concluded her career as the lone senior on the team after four years with the Leatherneck women's soccer program. She ends her career with two goals, two assists, 25 starts and 1,558 minutes of play.

"I wish that I got to coach her a couple of more years instead of just this season. The strides she's made this year has made her one of the best players on the field," said director of soccer Dr. Eric Johnson. "She really put herself in the game emotionally and played with a lot of passion. She set the tone for our game today. She'll be missed and someone will have to step into that leadership role in which she occupied with her energy, and off the field she's just a great person."

Both teams were scoreless through regulation. In double overtime, during the match's 108th minute, Oral Roberts' Sierra Beall was assisted by Tahlor Lyman inside the box to chip the ball in the net.

"Oral Roberts scored 13 goals against Fort Wayne and IUPUI, so for us to come out and bring them to a second overtime shows that we made some progress defensively this year," said Johnson. "I thought the girls played very hard and played one of their best defensive games of the season against one of the better teams in the league."

During the match, ORU held a 28-5 shot advantage over WIU, with 11 shots on goal. In net, Western junior Jennifer Currie recorded a career-high 10 saves. Madeline Edwards led the Leathernecks with two shots, followed by Emily Bollman, Ashley Kuhlmann and Stacie Wolfgram with one each.

Western Illinois caps off the 2016 season with a 4-11-2 record—doubling last season's record in wins—with a 2-5-1 mark in Summit League play.

"The team is young and so we have a lot of returning players for next season," said Johnson. "We have some work to do in the offseason, so we'll put in those hours required in technique. They made tremendous efforts of improvement since last February, since I started training with them, so I'm looking forward to see how they can improve some more."
