Western Falls to Bison, 3-1

Kaili Simmons compiles 32 digs, Shalyn Greenhaw records fifth double-double

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois volleyball team played host to North Dakota State Sunday afternoon (Oct. 2) in Summit League action. After taking the first set in extra points, the Leathernecks dropped the next three to the Bison and fell 3-1. With the loss, Western falls to 4-16 (1-4) on the year, while NDSU improves to 5-12 (3-0).

"Overall, we saw some good things. When we were going out confidently and executing our technique, things came together very well for us," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "I think that today was a very big learning lesson for not only dealing with pushing and coming from behind, but how to properly handle a lead. That's another piece of the growing process that we have to learn how to deal with better."

The Bison led 13-10 in the opening set when the Leathernecks went on a 3-0 run, highlighted by two kills from Shalyn Greenhaw, to tie the set at 13-13. North Dakota State then responded with five straight points to lead 18-13. Western would not back down, as a kill by Shiah Sanders and one from Dechant helped them pull within one, 19-18. The Bison then led 24-21 and looked to put things away when the Leathernecks came back. Two Bison errors put the Leathernecks within one, 24-23, and a kill by Greenhaw tied the set at 24-24. A kill by Riley Schumacher and a Bison error then gave Western its final two points to take a 26-24 set one victory.

Western jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the second set. The Leathernecks then used a 5-1 run led by two kills from Melanie Patenaude to go up 14-6. A trio of kills, two from Greenhaw and one from Patenaude, helped put Western up 17-7. The Bison were able to cut their deficit to six following a 4-0 spurt. NDSU then scored six straight points to come to within one. WIU looked to try and hang on for a set two victory, but the Bison went on another 4-0 run to take the second set 25-23.

NDSU had an early 10-4 lead in the third set that extended to 15-6 following a 5-2 run. Western later scored three straight points to cut their deficit to 17-12 and force an NDSU timeout. Three straight kills, two from Patenaude and one from Dechant, kept the Leathernecks within five at 21-18. Trailing 23-18, Abby Skryd and Greenhaw came down with consecutive kills, but it wasn't enough, as the Bison claimed the third set 25-24.

Both sides exchanged points throughout the opening portion of the fourth set. An ace from Skryd and a kill from Lexi Kolschefski put Western up 11-9. NDSU was then able to break away to lead 15-12. After a 5-1 run put the Bison up 20-13, Western went on a 4-1 run that included three kills from Patenaude to bring the score to 21-17. Greenhaw put up back-to-back kills to put Western within three, but the Bison claimed the final three points to win 25-19.

Kaili Simmons led the team with 32 digs, the second highest in her career. Greenhaw collected her second double-double in as many games with a team-leading 16 kills and 16 digs. Patenaude tied her career-high 11 kills while Skryd dished out 38 assists.
