Five Leathernecks Set Personal-Bests at Bradley Classic

Western Illinois completes regular season

PEORIA, Ill. – Five Leathernecks set personal-bests as the Western Illinois cross country teams wrapped up the regular season Friday (Oct. 14) at the Bradley Classic in Peoria. The men's squad finished 26th in the 8k while the women came in 31st in the 6k.

"Today was a meet filled with great competition," said head coach Mike Stevenson. "The caliber of the competition made us show our lack of depth. We had quite a few athletes who set personal-bests, but it just wasn't enough to help us get over the top. We are right in the middle of some heavy training. While many others are starting their tapers for conference meets and feeling fresh, we had heavy legs, but for good reason. Hopefully it pays off in two weeks."

Grant Kaiser was the first Leatherneck to cross the finish line, taking 115th place with a career-best 26:16 time in the 8k. Meanwhile, four other Western men also set personal bests, led by Lucas Lingle, who came in 134th at 26:29. Brady Hunt (27:18/160th), Keiffer Sexton (27:36/164th) and Corey Thompsen (27:48/167) also competed for the Leathernecks.

Freshman Abigail Richter narrowly became the first Western Illinois women's racer across the line, finishing in 158th with a time of 23:20. Fellow first-year Nicole Beebe followed close behind in 161st at 23:25. Madison Lefler came in 169th with a time of 23:34, while Stephanie Robles (26:01) and Jaclyn Finney (26:14) finished back-to-back in 203rd and 204th place, respectively.

The Bradley Classic was Western Illinois' final regular season meet. The Leathernecks host The Summit League Championships at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 29 at Spring Lake Park in Macomb.
