Kaiser, Lefler score best times for the Leathernecks

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Madison Lefler and Grant Kaiser led the Western Illinois cross country teams on Saturday morning (Oct. 1) at the Iowa Invitational: Regional Preview in Iowa City. The Leatherneck men battled to a third-place finish with Iowa and South Dakota, while the women raced with Iowa, South Dakota, Illinois, Northern Illinois, Northwestern and Omaha.

"This was a reasonably solid weekend for us," said head coach Mike Stevenson. "Both the men's and women's teams are a little beat up and have some illnesses, so we were short on numbers. But overall, most of the kids stepped up to the challenge and ran season-bests or generally well. We just need more depth."

For the third straight meet, Lefler led the Leathernecks on the 6K course, finishing 38th in 23:03. Right behind was Abigail Richter, who came in 39th with a time of 23:10. Nicole Beebe (23:18) registered 43rd place while Stephanie Robles (25:10, 66th) also competed for the Purple and Gold.

On the men's side, Kaiser (26:26) and Lucas Lingle (26:44) led the way by finishing 12th and 13th, respectively. Mark Kouchoukos (16th, 28:04), Corey Thompsen (17th, 28:13) and (18th, 28:16) rounded out the scoring for the Leathernecks.

Western Illinois will head back to Peoria for their final regular season meet on Friday, October 14, as the Leathernecks will run in the Bradley Classic.
