Leatherneck Men’s Basketball Drops Hard-Fought League Contest at SDSU

Garret Covington finished with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting

BROOKINGS, S.D. – South Dakota State used a 7-0 run midway through the second half to give SDSU its first lead of the game, on its way to a 63-59 Summit League victory over Western Illinois men's basketball Sunday afternoon (Jan. 3) inside Frost Arena.
 
The Leathernecks, who dropped to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in league play after the loss, grabbed the lead early and led by as much as 11 points in the first half. South Dakota State, who improved to 13-3 overall and 2-0 in league action, slowly chipped away at WIU's five-point halftime advantage until the Jackrabbits grabbed their first lead of the game, 49-47, with 8:53 to play in the game.
 
The two teams then exchanged baskets, and the lead, until the Jackrabbits worked their way to their largest lead of the game, four points, with 1:50 to play. WIU was able to cut its deficit to one point after junior guard Garret Covington made three free throws, but the Jackrabbits were able to connect on free throws of their  down the stretch on their way to their third consecutive victory.
 
Covington led all scorers with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field and making 5-of-5 from the free throw line. He also finished with five rebounds, two assists and no turnovers. The Edwardsville, Ill. native, jumped up to 20th in Western Illinois career scoring with 1,081 career points.
 
Senior forward Tate Stensgaard continued his hot streak offensively, finishing with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the field.
 
Leading the team with eight rebounds apiece was junior guard Jabari Sandifer and redshirt-freshman forward Jalen Morgan. Sandifer also led WIU with six assists, while both Sandifer and Morgan contributed six points offensively.
 
J.C. Fuller, a senior guard from Sioux City, Iowa, finished with nine points.
 
Western bettered South Dakota State in shooting percentage from the field, making 41.5 percent of its shots compared to the Jackrabbits only connecting on 33.3 percent of its attempts. WIU also bettered SDSU from the free throw line (92.3 percent – 69.2), and neither team was successful from long range (WIU: 25.0 | SDSU: 26.3).
 
The Leathernecks will look to end their four-game losing skid this Saturday at home when they welcome the IUPUI Jaguars to Macomb. The two teams are slated to tipoff at 2 p.m. prior to the women facing IUPUI inside Western Hall at 4:30 p.m.
