WIU was able to battle back and cut its deficit to one at the break, 26-25. Early on in the second half the game was back-and-forth before Western pulled ahead by five, 41-36, thanks to senior forward Jalen Chapman rattling off seven consecutive points all by himself, including two dunks and an old fashioned 3-point play. The two teams returned to back-and-forth basketball until the Jaguars pulled away late, on their way to their second consecutive league victory. Chapman sparked the Leathernecks off of the bench, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in a season-high 29 minutes of action. His 10 rebounds was a season high and matched his career best. He also had an assist and did not turn the ball over. Junior guard Garret Covington led the Leathernecks with 16 points, while senior guard J.C. Fuller added 11 points. Covington also dished out a team-high four assists. Tate Stensgaard, a senior forward, continued to be productive for WIU. He finished with nine points, five rebounds, two assists, two blocks, a steal and only one turnover in 26 minutes of action. For IUPUI, Darell Combs finished with a game-high 22 points and Nick Osborne tallied a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Leathernecks struggled from the field, going 24-of-64 (37.5%) for the game. They connected on even less of their attempts from long range, making only 3-of-19 (15.8%). IUPUI edged Western, 39-37, in rebounds, but the Leathernecks had more assists (13-10) and committed less turnovers (8-9). Western continues its three-game homestand next Thursday (Jan. 14) when Denver comes to Macomb. The Leathernecks then play host to Oral Roberts next Saturday (Jan. 16).Tweet #W1UPrint Friendly Version
