Leathernecks Continue Longest Road Swing of the Season

Western Illinois women's soccer prepares for Austin Peay and SIU-Edwardsville on Friday and Sunday

MACOMB, Ill. – With the non-conference portion of the season in full swing, the Western Illinois women's soccer team is preparing to take on Austin Peay State and SIU-Edwardsville on the road this weekend.

The Leathernecks will take on Austin Peay on Friday, September 11, in Clarksville, Tennessee at 7 p.m., and will head to Edwardsville, Illinois for a contest against SIU-E on Sunday, September 13, at 1 p.m.

A LOOK AT THE GOVERNORS: Austin Peay is 1-4 overall this season with its lone victory over Chattanooga on August 23. Since then, the Governors have suffered three straight defeats. Nicole Wojclk has been Austin Peay's top offensive player this season with two goals and one assist. Shelby Olszewski has also contributed with one goal and two assists. Lindsey Todd has spent the majority of the season in goal for the Governors, garnering 27 saves and allowing 13 goals. The Governors compiled an 11-6-2 overall record in 2014 and are led by head coach Kelley Guth, who is in her 13th season at the helm of the program.

SERIES HISTORY: The only meeting between the Leathernecks and the Governors was on August 27, 2010 in Clarksville, where Western fell 1-0.

A LOOK AT THE COUGARS: On Sunday, the Leathernecks will take on the defending Ohio Valley Conference Tournament and Regular Season Champions, the SIU-Edwardsville Cougars. The Cougars garnered a 13-6-2 overall record last season, but they do not return their top scorer from 2014. SIU-E is 1-3-2 so far in 2015, with a lone win against Chicago State. After being held scoreless all season, the Cougars unleashed seven goals to cruise past Chicago State 7-0, with all seven tallies scored by different players. SIU-E will take on St. Louis on Friday, September 11, before welcoming the Leathernecks to Edwardsville.

SERIES HISTORY: Western and SIU-Edwardsville have met twice in program history with Western leading the series 1-0-1. In 2010, the Leathernecks and the Cougars came to a 0-0 draw in Macomb. The two teams met the following season in 2011 in Edwardsville, where Western took the victory 2-1.

LAST TIME OUT: On Tuesday, September 8, the Leathernecks fell to Northern Iowa by a score of 3-0 in Cedar Falls. Victoria Kappel and Lexi Harris both split time in goal, compiling four total saves. Skyler Jessop, Brianna Hughes, and Madeline Edwards all took shots on goal, but were unable to get the ball past UNI's keeper.
