Volleyball Falls, 3-0, at North Dakota State

Western returns home to open home league slate against Fort Wayne (Oct. 2) and IUPUI (Oct. 4)

FARGO, N.D. – The Western Illinois team was unable to collect its second consecutive Summit League victory Saturday (September 26) night, as the Leathernecks dropped a 3-0 decision to North Dakota State. WIU falls to 3-13 (1-1 Summit League) while the Bison move to 10-5 (1-1).

"We did not do a good job adjusting to the speed of the game this evening," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "NDSU did a great job utilizing their middle attack, and we didn't answer back. We still are looking for that consistency of play that will be crucial for our conference campaign. We are looking forward to being home the next two weeks. It's been a long month on the road, and we are ready for Leatherneck nation to see some volleyball."

The hosts stormed out of the gate, as NDSU scored the first six points of the match which forced a WIU timeout. Following timeout, Western responded with a 6-1 run to pull within a single point at 7-6 in favor of the Bison. Shiah Sanders and Peyton Crosser each collected a kill for the Purple and Gold, while Crosser also added an ace. Western couldn't maintain the momentum as NDSU built a lead that couldn't be caught, picking up a 25-15 victory over the Leathernecks in the opening set.

Western and North Dakota State battled in the early stages of the second set, as the teams traded points, and the lead. Reilly Dunne's kill gave Western a 4-3 lead early, and a Bison error on the next point extended the lead to two. Western would build the lead to two again at 13-11 following a 3-0 Purple and Gold run. Crosser tallied her second ace of the night (she would end with three), while the duo of Sanders and Lexi Kolschefski would each pick up a kill. With the two point lead, NDSU would end the set on a 15-1 run to pick up a 25-14 victory in the set and a 2-0 lead in the match.

Western battled in the third set, as the team used a 4-1 run to pull within three at 20-17. Crosser used a solo block and a kill to spark the run. Dunne followed with a kill, and Jordan Jackson ended the spree with a run of her own. The attempt to get back into the final set fell short, as NDSU secured the match with a 25-20 victory in the third.

Crosser and Dunne each recorded seven kills on the night to pace the Purple and Gold. Abby Skryd dished out 22 assists, and Kate Hickey added a team-high 10 digs on the night.

Western returns home to open its home slate of Summit League play, as the Leathernecks welcome Fort Wayne and IUPUI to Macomb next Friday and Sunday, October 2nd and 4th. WIU's Friday night match against the Mastodons will get started at 7 p.m. while the Leathernecks and Jaguars will have a 1 p.m. start on Sunday.
