Men's Soccer Falls to Bowling Green

Conrad Hagar's goal not enough as Leathernecks fall to Falcons

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Western Illinos men's soccer team took the field on Sunday, August 30, looking to pick up its first victory of the season. A goal by Conrad Hager in the opening half as not enough as the Leathernecks dropped a 4-1 decision to Bowling Green.

"Different day, similar result against a pretty good attacking Bowling Green team. We gave them their first goal on a bad pass that went right to their leading scorer for an early lead. In game of moments, we have to find better moments for our crew and we have to get fit and healthy. We will regroup and prepare for Valparaiso on Friday."

The Leathernecks were stunned early as Pat Flynn gave Bowling Green a 1-0 lead three minutes into the game. Following a steal by Joe Sullivan, Flynn beat Sam Copp to put the Falcons on the board. Sullivan and Flynn would be heard from again, as the pair would account for all four of the Bowling Green goals Sunday afternoon.

In the 21st minute, it was Sullivan's turn to add to the lead, as he converted on an attempt off the assists of Tate Robertson and Bismark Agyeman.

Western recorded its first shot of the day in the 26th minute, and the team made it count, as Conrad Hager put the Leathernecks on the board with his first goal of the season. Fernando Pacheco and Hager found themselves on a 2-on-0 breakaway, and Hager put one into the back of the net to pull the Purple and Gold within a goal of Bowling Green. Hager nearly evened the score two minutes later as his header was on target, but Ryan Heuton was there for the save. At the half, the Falcons held a 2-1 advantage over Western.

The Leathernecks carried the momentum into the second half, as the team got a pair of shots on target in the opening eight minutes of play. Both shots were saved by Huetton, and the lead remained one for Bowling Green. After surviving the WIU attack, the Falcons made it 3-1 in the 54th minute as Flynn netted his second goal of the game with a strike from the center of the box. Flynn would add his third goal of the afternoon in the 78th minute, sealing the 4-1 decision for Bowling Green.

Western returns home to open its home slate on Friday, September 4, as the Leathernecks play host to Valparaiso. Kickoff is slated for 5 p.m. on John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
