Leathernecks Fall in Pitcher's Duel Against Oral Roberts

Western fell, 2-0, to the Golden Eagles on Thursday (May 14).

TULSA, Okla.- Western Illinois baseball and Oral Roberts went toe-to-toe on Thursday (May 14) as the Leathernecks fell, 2-0, at J.L. Johnson Field in Tulsa.

Preston Church pitched a gem for the Purple and Gold, allowing just one run in 7.1 innings with six strikeouts in the loss. Brent Turner tallied Western's lone extra-base hit, going 1-for-4 with a double. WIU falls to 17-31 on the season and 10-18 in The Summit League. Oral Roberts improves to 36-14 and 23-5.

"That is as good a pitching performance as we have had here. Preston (Church) was locked in the whole game," said head coach Ryan Brownlee following the loss. "He has pitched like a Friday starter in consecutive starts. We competed well the whole game. We limited free bases, which is why we kept the score down. This group has grown up a lot in a month. We battled a good pitcher. We had a chance in the first, but needed one more quality at-bat."

The Purple and Gold threatened to score on the league-leading Golden Eagles right away. Turner opened the game, doubling to right-center field, and Colton Pogue followed up with a single. JJ Reimer loaded the bases with a one-out single to right. However, the ORU defense stood strong and forced WIU to strand three.

Following Western's opening frame, Oral Robert's defense locked down the Leatherneck bats as the Golden Eagles grabbed one run in the fifth and another in the eighth to seal the win.

Despite a quality performance, Church was given the loss and falls to 2-7 on the season. Jordan Pannell added a partial inning of relief and Mark Garton, Roman Visintine, and Adam McGinnis contributed singles to Western's six-hit effort.

Game two of the series is scheduled for Friday (May 15) at 6:30 p.m. Due to Western hosting The Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Championships, live audio will not be available.
