Leathernecks Fall in Game Two at ORU

Berth in Summit League Tournament will go down to the final day

TULSA, Okla. – Western Illinois' offense at Oral Roberts could not find a way to cross home plate, dropping a 4-0 decision on Friday night (May 15).

The Fighting Leathernecks' (17-32 overall, 10-19 Summit League) loss, combined with North Dakota State splitting with Omaha, sets up a showdown in the regular season finale for the final spot in the postseason tournament. Either a WIU win or NDSU loss (since Western holds the tie-breaker) on Saturday would give Western the four seed at next week's tournament in Sioux Falls.

Western actually out-hit the Golden Eagles 8-7, but ORU (37-14, 24-5) got all the runs it would need in the third inning, thanks to three runs coming home.

Colton Pogue singled with one out in the first, then when J.J. Reimer singled Pogue tried for third but was thrown out.

Tom Constand gave up a one-out double in the second to put runners on second and third, but he got a fielder's choice putout at home and a flyball to end the threat. A sacrifice fly in the third and a 2-run homer by Anthony Sequeira accounted for ORU's runs in the third.

Chris Tschida led off the fourth with a single, then Adam McGinnis lined a one-out double to put two runners in scoring position. But a strikeout and a groundout ended Western's best scoring threat of the night. ORU added an insurance run in the sixth on Noah Cummings' solo homer.

Constand nearly went the distance, going 7.2 innings before Sam Cottingham-Beard got the final out of the eighth inning. Constand (3-8) allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out five. Pogue accounted for two of Western's eight hits.

Xavier Altamirano went six innings and scattered six hits while striking out four. The three ORU pitchers did not allow a walk in the game.

The regular season finale set for Saturday (May 16) is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
