Baseball Drops Series Opener to Oral Roberts

Western could not slow down ORU offense

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois tied the game early on, but the Fighting Leathernecks could not find an answer to Oral Roberts' offense falling 19-1 in the Summit League baseball series opener at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium on Friday. The loss drops Western to 9-18 overall and 5-8 in the league.

League-leading ORU (22-10, 11-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead following Anthony Sequeira's RBI single with two outs. Western's Joe Mortillaro was able to get out of the inning, then work around a one-out hit by pitch in the second inning to keep it a one-run game. The Leathernecks tied it up in their half of the second.

JJ Reimer lined a leadoff single and took second on Adam McGinnis' single. A flyball put runners on the corners with one out. Two batters later Brent Turner delivered a RBI single of his own with two outs, tying the score. From there it was all Golden Eagles.

ORU plated two runs in the third, then added three runs in the fourth inning. The game was essentially put out of reach in the fifth to chase Mortillaro. ORU got three consecutive hits in the fifth, each driving in two runs, to make it 12-1.

Western got a two-out single from Chris Tschida in the third, leadoff double by Turner in the fifth, then a one-out single from Reimer in the sixth but could not get another run across.

The Golden Eagles plated seven runs in the seventh for the final margin. Derrian James led all hitters going 6-for-6 at the plate with four runs scored and five RBI. He hit two doubles in the seventh inning, leading the ORU edge in hits 20-7. Seven ORU players finished with a multi-hit game.

Xavier Altamirano (4-1) gave up one run on seven hits in six innings. He walked one and fanned seven.

Reimer and Turner led Western with two hits each. Mortillaro (2-3) was charged for 12 runs (11 earned) on 13 hits in 4.1 innings.

"That's not indicative of Joe at all. He was up and he hasn't been elevated like that all year. On a day like today (windy) when you're elevated guys are going to get good swings off, and the way the wind is something good is going to happen," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "To their guy's credit he pitched down and that's what you have to do. When we made pitches down we got guys out and that's baseball. I give our position players credit. We stayed after it and took care of the baseball, but the good thing about baseball is you have another game tomorrow."

Game two of the series is scheduled for a 12 noon start, as part of the alumni reunion weekend.
