Western's Season Concludes After Loss to Top-Seeded SDSU in League Tournament

Western Illinois finishes its 2014-15 slate with an 8-20 overall record

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Western Illinois men's basketball team dropped its 2015 Summit League Championships opening-round contest, 87-50, to the top-seeded South Dakota State Jackrabbits Saturday evening (March 7).

Western was led by junior guard J.C. Fuller who finished with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting from the field.Ā  The Sioux City, Iowa native also led the team with five rebounds in a team-high 36 minutes of action.

Sophomore guard Garret Covington was the only other Leathernecks to score in double figures, contributing 13 points. He also had a team-high two steals.

WIU finished with only 21 total rebounds compared to South Dakota State who had 46 rebounds, 21 of which were on the offensive end.

SDSU also bettered the Leathernecks in assists (14-5), turnovers (11-18), blocks (5-3) and steals (7-4). The Jackrabbits also scored 21 points off of WIU's turnovers

The Leathernecks struggled from the field, connecting on only 36.0 percent (18-50) of its shots, while SDSU connected on 47.0 percent (31-66) of its attempts from the field.

South Dakota State also shot better from long range, 44.4 percent – 27.8.

The Jackrabbits had 12 different players score, and were led by George Marshall who finished with 13 points.

After the win the Jackrabbits will advance to the semifinals and face the winner of tomorrow's South Dakota/Fort Wayne matchup. South Dakota State improves to 22-9 overall on the season.

Western Illinois finishes its 2014-15 slate with an 8-20 overall record, and concluded Summit League play 3-13.
