Leathernecks Drop Game 3 to North Dakota State

JJ Reimer scored both of Western's runs in the 10-2 loss.

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois baseball fell 10-2 in Sunday's game three against North Dakota State as the Bison avoided the series sweep. The Leathernecks are now 7-15 overall and 4-5 in Summit League play.

The Purple and Gold battled back to tie the game twice, once in the second and again in the fourth, but a five-run ninth for NDSU proved too much as the Bison improve to 6-16 and 2-7 in league play.

"We weren't as sharp as we needed to be today. It's hard to beat a team three times. If you want to sweep a team you have to be sharp mentally and we just weren't where we needed to be," said head coach Ryan Brownlee. "We didn't play poorly, but we had some missed fly balls and we needed a better approach at the plate. The wind played a factor but you still have to hit the ball hard."

The Bison took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after a leadoff double, but the Leathernecks would answer right back in the bottom of the second.

JJ Reimer was hit by a pitch to start the inning off, and a one-out single from Roman Visintine put runners on the corners. A wild pitch moved Visintine to second and scored Reimer to even the game at one run apiece.

NDSU plated another run in the fourth to reclaim the lead, but Western would not go away.

Reimer was hit again, the seventh time this season, to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning, and wild pitch moved the senior over to second. This time it would be Brent Turner driving in Reimer with a two-out RBI single to keep the game even.

However, two home runs from NDSU's John Skrbec in the fifth (two RBI) and the seventh (one RBI) gave the Bison a three-run advantage, and five runs of insurance in the ninth sealed the deal.

"The home runs they hit were hit hard," said Brownlee. "It wasn't a poor game and winning the series is a good thing, but obviously you'd like to finish it off and sweep them. Then you've won four in a row, have some momentum and can get some things going."

Preston Church was credited the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and five walks with four strikeouts over five innings over work. J.T. Baksha struck out one in three innings of relief. Nick Smith and Pete Minella combined to retire the final three Bison batters.

Jake Moore led the team, going 2-for-4 at the plate while Reimer went 1-for-2 and scored both of WIU's runs. Turner's lone RBI capped off a seven-hit effort from the Leathernecks.

Western Illinois will host Iowa this Wednesday (April 1) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium to conclude its eight-game homestand. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
