@WIU_Baseball Drops Game 3 and Series To South Dakota State

Chris Tschida hit a two-run home run in the 9-7 loss.

MACOMB, Ill. - Leatherneck baseball dropped a 9-7 slugfest to South Dakota State on Sunday (March 22) at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium in game three of the weekend series. The loss drops Western to 2-4 in The Summit League, 4-14 overall.

Chris Tschida hit a go-ahead two-run home run in the third, but five straight innings of scoring for South Dakota State proved too much. The win improves the Jackrabbits to 9-11 overall and 2-4 in The Summit League.

"Every league weekend is going to be a dogfight, but the good thing about our league is you play 30 games and face everyone six times," said head coach Ryan Brownlee following the game three loss. "If you make adjustments the second go-around it gives you a chance to win a series or sweep a series. We were better this weekend than we were last weekend, so that is an improvement."

Both teams started the game with a one-two-three first inning. In the second, lefty-starter Preston Church induced a ground-ball double play and a third ground out to hold South Dakota State scoreless.

In the bottom of second, Brent Turner walked followed by back-to-back singles from JJ Reimer and Adam McGinnis, to make the score 1-0. McGinnis stole second, his fourth stolen base of the year. Then, Kendall King hit a two-out single past the second baseman, driving in Reimer and McGinnis to make it 3-0 Western.

SDSU answered in the third, tying the score with three runs on a pair of Western errors, but the Leathernecks would respond in the bottom of the inning.

Following a Jake Moore walk, Chris Tschida stepped to the plate and smacked the first pitch he saw over the left field fence, his first of the year.

"Offensively we are showing signs of life, which is good," said coach Brownlee. "It's nice to see that the work guys are putting in is finally paying off at the plate."

The Leathernecks added to their 5-3 lead with a two-out RBI single from Colton Pogue, scoring Reimer from second base, before the Jacks could get out of the inning.

However, SDSU would not go away. The Jackrabbits would score a run in three consecutive innings to tie the score at six in the top of the sixth, and use a two-run seventh to take the lead.

Pogue would score on a wild pitch in the eighth, but an insurance run for the visitors in the ninth put the game out of reach.

As a team, the Leathernecks tallied 11 hits including multi-hit days from Reimer (2) and Tschida (2). Moore added a double, his third of the year, and Payton Jeffers continued to stay hot, extending his hitting streak to a team-high eight games.

Church's start ended after five innings of work, but he would not factor in the decision. The sophomore gave up just two earned runs (five total) on six hits, five walks and one strikeout. Jordan Pannell (1-1) was credited the loss after giving up three runs (one earned) in 1.1 innings of work. J.T. Baksha, Sam Cottingham-Beard, Pete Minella, and Nick Smith all appeared in relief. The quartet combined to give up just one run on five hits with a walk and a strikeout.

The Purple and Gold take the field next against Illinois-Springfield on Wednesday (March 25). First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Alfred D. Boyer Stadium.
