Comebacks Fall Short as Western Drops Two

The Leathernecks lost to Syracuse and North Dakota on Sunday (Feb. 8).

ROSEMONT, Ill. - Fighting Leatherneck softball attempted to mount two comebacks on Sunday (Feb. 8) but came up short, falling to Syracuse and North Dakota. Western lost 4-3 to the Orange to begin the day and 5-3 to UND to conclude the Total Control Sports Invitational.

GAME ONE: Western Ilinois 3, Syracuse 4:

Western fell behind early against Syracuse when Corrine Ozzane hit a two-run homer that was originally ruled an out per the ground rules at The Dome at The Ballpark. After a conference between the umpires, the call was reversed, giving Syracuse a 2-0 lead.

The Orange tacked on another in the third before Western would get the offense going. Lia Romeo hit her second triple of the weekend with one out in the fifth inning and would be brought in by Tierney Bottino. One inning later,
Sammy Marshall sparked a two-out rally after being hit by a pitch. Marshall then stole second and was driven in by Teagan Walsh.

Syracuse tacked on a run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run, making the deficit 4-2. But Western would have a chance thanks to back-to-back walks from Holly Hoelting and Romeo. Bottino hit a bloop single to right to score Beatty, who was running for Hoelting. Western had runners at the corners and runners at first and second, but were unable to score the tying run.

Kacyee Hart was hit with the loss. Hart worked three innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Kirkpatrick came on to start the fourth, allowing one run on two hits while striking out two.

GAME TWO: Western Illinois 3, North Dakota 5:

Western would again fall behind early after North Dakota plated one run in the bottom of the first. Western however responded immediately in the second. Romeo and Bottino both reached to lead off the second, setting the stage for Brooke Stulga's first career double and RBI, as she plated Romeo. Nina Maggio singled to left to score Bottino but both Maggio an Stulga were left on base as the inning came to a close.

UND responded in the bottom half on consecutive doubles only for Western to retake the lead in the third. Kelsey Marlow led off the inning with a single to right and would later score thanks to Bottino's third RBI of the day. Back-to-back doubles from USD in the bottom of the third would leave the score at 3-all until the fifth.

In the fifth, UND took a 5-3 lead with a two-run home run to left. Western put runners at second and third in each of the final two innings, but could not find the final hit to score the needed runs.

Brooke Stulga got the nod to start but was given a no decision. The freshman pitched four innings, striking out her first career batter in the second. Stulga allowed three runs on seven hits. Kirkpatrick was tagged with the loss, as the senior threw the final two innings, giving up two runs on two hits.

Western Illinois will have two weeks off before taking the field in Conway, Arkansas for the Central Arkansas Tournament. Western begins play in Conway on Saturday (Feb. 21) against Louisiana-Monroe at 1:30 p.m.
