Leathernecks Fall to Kansas State in Nonconference Action

Western Illinois closes out 2015 play on Monday, December 28, at Illinois State

MANHATTAN, KAN. – The Western Illinois women's basketball team dropped an 84-45 decision at Big 12 Conference member Kansas State Monday (Dec. 21) evening. The Leathernecks dropped to 6-6 on the year while the Wildcats, winners of seven straight, move to 10-1 on the year. Taylor McClintock led the way offensively for the Purple and Gold, as her 13 points were a team-high. It marks the seventh time this season, and the third consecutive game in which McClintock has topped 10 points.

"Early I thought we had a good mentality and just weren't hitting shots," said head coach JD Gravina. "We were shooting it about as bad as we could and were only down six after the first quarter. We grinded it out and then just completely laid down and gave no intensity in that second quarter. To get outscored 31-4, there is just no excuse for it. We have to find our identity again, which is that team that will come out and fight like crazy. Hopefully after Christmas break we can find that identity, both as individuals, and as a team."

Western Illinois battled with the Wildcats in the opening frame, as a 5-0 Leatherneck run trimmed the K-State lead to four midway through the first. McClintock hit a jumper before Michelle Maher connected on a triple to pull WIU with four at 13-9. Michelle Farrow was able to beat the buzzer with a long jumper as Western trailed 19-13 after one quarter of play.

The Purple and Gold struggled to get anything going in the second quarter, as the host Wildcats outscored Western Illinois 31-4. At halftime, Western Illinois trailed by a 50-17 margin. Kansas State extended its lead in the third, owning a 21-10 advantage in the quarter. Western held an advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 18-13.

WIU had no answer for 6-foot-5 Breanna Lewis, as her 30 points led all scorers Monday evening. KSU's height and zone defense caused shooting troubles for the Leathernecks, who were limited to 24.7 (18-of-73) percent shooting from the field. One of the best 3-point shooting teams in the country, WIU was never able to warm up from beyond the arc, connecting on only 5-of-36 attempts.

Nine different Leathernecks scored in the contest, with eight recording rebounds.

Western Illinois will head home for the holidays before returning to action on Monday, December 28. The Purple and Gold close out the calendar year with an in-state contest at Illinois State. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. inside Redbird Arena.
