Leathernecks End Exhibition Play with 63-41 Victory Over Truman State

Western returns to action for regular season opener on Friday, November 13, against Central Methodist

MACOMB, Ill. – The Leatherneck women's basketball team closed out their exhibition schedule Thursday (Nov. 5) evening, as Western Illinois entertained Division II Truman State. Western's defense clamped down on the Bulldogs, picking up a 63-41 victory inside Western Hall.

"Truman State is a really solid Division II team. I'm a big fan of the Division II level, their offense was tough to guard," said head coach JD Gravina. "I'm really pleased with our defensive effort, tremendous defensive effort regarding our read and react. That's a lot of movement and you can't make a mistake defensively or they make you pay for it. That's a good sized team, they're not much smaller than most of the Mid-Major Division I teams we'll play. I thought our rebounding efforts from Sophie (Reichelt) and Mallory (Boyle) were really impressive. Our guards got out there and rebounded well, Michelle (Farrow) rebounded well during the second half so I'm excited about that."

The Purple and Gold, who never trailed Thursday evening, limited Truman State to 21.1 percent shooting (12-of-57). Western's defense hounded the Bulldogs all night, forcing 19 turnovers while collecting 13 steals.

Western's offense was well distributed, as four players tallied double figures. Sophie Reichelt recorded her second double-double in as many games, finishing with 13 rebounds and 10 points. Michelle Maher led all scorers with 15 points, while Michelle Farrow and Taylor McClintock each added 13 points.

Thursday's contest featured the Leathernecks opening with the game's first 11 points. Reichelt connected on a layup and a jumper to get the scoring started before baskets by Farrow and Mallory Boyle followed. Western's scoring run ended on a Maher 3-pointer from the corner. Following a Truman State three, Farrow connected on one of her three triples in the game to push the lead back to 11 at 14-3.

After building a 31-19 lead going into halftime, Western grew its advantage to as many as 18 points in the third quarter. Midway through the third quarter, McClintock and Farrow connected on back-to-back threes to extend Western's lead to 18 before Farrow finished a layup shortly after to maintain WIU's 18-point lead. Western's advantage would balloon to 22 points in the closing minutes of the game, with McClintock's bucket capping the scoring Thursday night.

"Offensively, I think we're still pushing the ball. I like that we got some easy shots around the basket. I think that we still have to work on getting into our offensive flow, and a lot of that comes from when you're knocking down shots. It makes us a lot tougher to guard and that's something that we can continue to improve on," added Gravina.

Western Illinois next hits the court for its regular season opener when it plays host to Central Methodist on Friday, November 13, inside Western Hall. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m.
