Corrie Records First Career Shutout as Leathernecks Blank Bradley, 1-0

Jacob Bevan's goal in first half stands tall as Western picks up the clean sheet

MACOMB, Ill. – Freshman Bruce Corrie recorded his first career shutout and junior Jacob Bevan netted the game's only goal Monday (Oct. 5) afternoon, as Western Illinois knocked off in-state foe Bradley by a 1-0 final. The victory on John MacKenzie Alumni Field moved Western to 3-7-1 (0-2 Summit League) on the season while the Braves fell to 4-7 (1-0 Missouri Valley).

"Defensively, to get a shutout, that's a big step for us. Most of that is just energy and closing people down and committing to it as a team," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "We played a few more guys, we had some tired legs, which helped us a little bit. So we are happy. It's been a while since we have had a shutout, almost a year, so that was good. I thought Bruce (Corrie) did really well, was tough in goal, and made critical saves just by being physical. The backline was solid, so we are pretty pleased with that."

Corrie, who was making his second-consecutive start following an injury which forced him out of game action earier this season, made eight saves, five in the second half, en route to the clean sheet. It marks Western's first shutout since a 1-0 victory at Eastern Illinois on October 18, 2014. It was the final game of a stretch of six consecutive shutouts for All-Summit League honoree Yves Dietrich.

"He was being aggressive to all of the flighted balls. He held on to everything. His kicks were good today. Basically he had an all-around good game. He was aggressive and took the punishment when he had to and didn't cough up the ball," added Johnson.

A native of Redmond, Washington, Corrie only needed one goal to record the shutout, and that's what he got. In the 29th minute, Bevan put the Leathernecks up 1-0 with a beautiful goal from inside the box. After beating the Braves defense, Bevan streaked along the endline towards Logan Ketterer, the Bradley goalie. Just as he entered the penalty box, Bevan took one touch back up the field, and fed the ball past Ketterer to the far post.

Bevan, who now has three goals on the campaign, nearly made it 2-0 in the 68th minute after a through ball from Drew Whalen found the junior 1-on-1 with the Bradley goalie. One touch later, Bevan had beaten the netminder, but as he was turning to put a shot on frame Bevan lost his balance, and his off-balance shot missed the near post by inches.

The Western defense clamped down in the second half as the Braves attack picked up. WIU's defense faced a total of 10 shots in the final 45 minutes of play, with a majority of those shots coming in the final 20 minutes of play. Each time, however, the back line stood tall to preserve the clean sheet.

Western Illinois looks to take its momentum into this weekend, as the Purple and Gold hit the road for a Summit League contest. The Leathernecks will travel to Nebraska, this Saturday, October 10, for a critical league game against Omaha. The Mavs, who were receiving votes in the latest NSCAA poll, sit at 7-2-1 on the season, including a 1-0-1 mark in league play with a victory over Fort Wayne and a draw against IUPUI. Kickoff on Caniglia Field is set for 7 p.m.
