Volleyball Drops Three-Set Match to IUPUI

Leathernecks return to courts on Tuesday, October 6, as they play host to Southeast Missouri State

MACOMB, Ill. – Western Illinois continued its four-match homestand on Sunday, October 4, as the Leathernecks played host to IUPUI in Summit League action. The Leathernecks were never able gain any traction, as IUPUI took home a 3-0 decision. Western falls to 3-15 (1-3) on the year while the Jaguars improve to 12-6 (3-1) with the victory.

"We have to learn how to bounce back a little bit quicker," said head coach Kelly Richardson. "We are still struggling with finding a way to answer back to things with a sense of urgency. That is something that we have to continue working on. We have to put that into place tomorrow. We have to come in, have a good practice, and get ready for our match on Tuesday."

The Leathernecks struggled out of the gate in the opening set, as IUPUI opened up a 6-1 advantage over the Purple and Gold, forcing a Western timeout. Peyton Crosser and Jordan Jackson sparked a 3-0 run late in the set with a combination block on the outside. A pair of freshmen teamed for a block on the next play, as Abby Skryd and Lexi Kolschefski came together to keep the run alive. Kolschefski ended the run with a kill out of the middle. The run wasn't enough, as Western fell, 25-13.

IUPUI claimed the second set, 25-12, thanks to a 6-0 run to open the scoring. Western was able to pull within four at 10-6 following three straight Leatherneck points that was highlighted by back-to-back kills from Kolschefski and Krishna Merriman.

The final set of the afternoon went to the Jaguars, 25-14. Western battled to the very end, as the team used a 4-1 run in the closing moments as the team looked to get back into the set. WIU used combination blocks from Kolschefski/Melanie Patenaude and Jackson/Merriman, paired with kills from Merriman and Patenaude to highlight play for the Purple and Gold.

Crosser tallied a team-best nine kills, Kolschefski added seven, and Skryd dished out 21 assists. Crosser and Kaili Simmons each recorded 10 digs on the afternoon for the Leathernecks, who next return to action on Tuesday, October 6, as the team faces Southeast Missouri State in midweek nonconference action. First serve is set for 6 p.m. inside Western Hall.
