Women's Soccer Drops Match to South Dakota State, 2-1

Freshman Caitlin Rerucha scores first career goal in defeat

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team played host to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in a Summit League matchup on Friday, October 30, at John Mackenzie Alumni Field in Macomb. The Fighting Leathernecks fell to the Jackrabbits by a score of 2-1 and moved to 2-14 (1-6 SL) on the season. With the win, SDSU clinched a Summit League Tournament berth and advanced to 10-5-2 (5-1-1 SL).

"I thought the game was gifted away in the first 11 minutes. We left ourselves with a lot of work to do for no reason," said head coach Dr. Ted Flogaites.

"You can't be at the college level and start slow… It came down to individual moments, and in the majority of the individual moments this year we came up on the receiving end and that's why we're not winning games."

Western goalkeeper Victoria Kappel was called upon first in the third minute as SDSU put a shot on target, forcing her to make the save. Ashley Kuhlmann responded with a shot on goal of her own just a few minutes later, but Jackrabbit keeper Nicole Inskeep was there to make the stop.

South Dakota State got on the board first in the 10th minute when Diana Potterveld challenged a WIU defender at the top of the box and before putting her shot in the back of the net past the keeper. Two minutes later, the Jackrabbits increased their lead to 2-0 when Potterveld dribbled past a defender on the goal line and crossed to Brittany Jensen, who found the back of the net.

In the 40th minute, Meagan Wilson grabbed possession of the ball outside the goal, causing the SDSU keeper to come out of the box and challenge her. Wilson flicked the ball over Inskeep to an open Caitlin Rerucha who placed the ball in between the posts for her first career goal.

South Dakota State would take a few more chances, but was unable to answer and extend its lead. After 45 minutes of play, the Jackrabbits led the Leathernecks by a score of 2-1.

Western had a series of clean looks to open the second half. Daniela Salinas attempted a shot that was blocked and Skyler Jessop would handle the deflection and send a header straight at the goal that was saved. Michaela Cody found possession just moments later, but her attempt was high. Cody would take a header following a corner kick from Gina Scaffidi that was also just above the crossbar.

The Jackrabbits' best chance to score in the second half came in the 73rd minute following a WIU foul. Potterveld set up for a penalty kick and sent her shot wide. Alyssa Brazil grabbed the second chance shot, but couldn't get it past Kappel.

In the 74th minute, it looked as if the Leathernecks would hit the equalizer when Daniela Salinas moved the ball down the field and put a shot straight on target, but Inskeep denied her chance.

The match remained close during the final 15 minutes of play, but neither side was able to capitalize on any more chances and the Jackrabbits would take the 2-1 victory.

The Purple and Gold will welcome North Dakota State to John Mackenzie Alumni Field on Sunday, November 1, as a part of Senior Day. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
