Leathernecks Fall, 2-0, at Milwaukee

Team closes out the regular season on Sunday, November 1, with Senior Day contest against IUPUI

MILWAUKEE, WIS. – The Western Illinois men's soccer team took to a rain-soaked field Tuesday (Oct. 27) evening, as the Leathernecks faced Milwaukee in their final non-league contest of the season. The conditions put a damper on the Western offense, as the team dropped a 2-0 decision. Heading into its final match of the regular season, WIU sits at 5-10-1 overall and 2-3 in Summit League play while the Panthers improved to 4-9-2 (1-4-2 Horizon League) with the victory.

"The early goal on a restartput us under but we recovered and did some good things and competed well," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Milwaukee was physical and brought good energy on their home field. (Jacob) Bjornsen and (Kyle) Walton paired up as center backs for the first time and did a nice job in the back. We thought we pulledone back to bring it to 1-1, but (Jacob) Bevan was flagged for offsides. We now head back to work for our home game on Sunday."

The Panthers tallied a goal in the first and second half en route to the 2-0 shutout victory. Declan Rodriguez put Milwaukee on the board in the sixth minute, as he was on the receiving end of a 22-yard free kick by Zach Stevenson. The tally was the fourth of the year for Rodriguez.

Western's offense was stymied by the Panther defense, as the team could only muster three shots in the opening 45 minutes. Fernando Pacheco's attempt sailed high, while Amadeo Carbo and Alejandro Pacheco each had shots blocked by Milwaukee's defense.

It would take until the 79th minute for Western to put a shot on frame. The attempt, which came off the foot of Alejandro Pacheco, was corralled by Milwaukee's Agustin Rey. Rey would be called upon again in the 87th minute, as Armel Kouassi looked to bring Western back into the game. The shot was saved as Agustin collected the clean sheet.

The one goal Milwaukee advantage turned to two in the 72nd minute, as Stevenson tallied his first goal of the season. Francesco Saporito and Alex Young combined on a passing sequence which found the ball centered along the end line. The centering pass connected with Stevenson in front of the net, who finished off the play to collect his third point of the night.

Western returns to Macomb for its regular season finale, as the team hosts IUPUI on Sunday, November 1. Eight seniors will be honored prior to the start of the match, which is scheduled to kickoff at 1:30.
