Women's Soccer Prepares for Weekend of Summit League Matchups

Leathernecks on the road against Omaha on Friday, home against IUPUI on Sunday

 

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women's soccer team is readying for a pair of Summit League contests this weekend against Omaha and IUPUI on October 16 and 18. The Leathernecks will hit the road for a match against Omaha on Friday at 7 p.m. before welcoming the IUPUI Jaguars to town on Sunday at 1.
 
Western (2-9) (1-1 SL) is fresh off its first Summit League victory of the season over Oral Roberts on October 11, and currently sit fourth in league standings. Brianna Hughes and Skyler Jessop lead the squad with two goals apiece, while Tyra Markey leads the team two assists. Victoria Kappel has spent over 950 minutes in goal and has compiled 43 saves on the season.
 
A LOOK AT THE MAVERICKS: Omaha has compiled a 4-8-2 record (1-3 SL) this season and are currently seventh in the league standings following a loss to Fort Wayne last weekend. Chelsi Rohloff leads the team with five goals. Katlyn Schochenmaler handles the netminding duties. She's garnered 61 saves and has allowed 17 goals and ranks fifth in The Summit League with a goals-against average of 1.52.
 
SERIES HISTORY: Friday will mark the fifth meeting between the Mavericks and Leathernecks. Western leads the all-time series 3-1 all three of those wins coming over the past three seasons.
 
A LOOK AT THE JAGUARS: The Jaguars are 5-5-2 (0-1-1 SL) on the year and sit eighth in league standings. Krissy Kirkhoff is IUPUI's top offensive target, as her eight goals and seven assists lead the team and rank second in The Summit League. Tori Minnich also contributes with six goals and two assists on the season. Catherine Schmidt will be in goal for the Jaguars. She has garnered 55 saves and ranks fourth in the league with a goals-against average of 1.30. IUPUI will take on Oral Roberts in Tulsa on October 16 before heading to Macomb.

SERIES HISTORY: Sunday will mark the 18th meeting between the Leathernecks and Jaguars, with Western holding a 9-8-0 advantage. IUPUI grabbed a 2-1 win at home over the Leathernecks last season.

LAST TIME OUT: The Leathernecks defeated the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles by a score of 3-2 on October 11 for its first Summit League victory of the season. Brianna Hughes struck first in the 23rd minute off an assist from Daniela Salinas. Oral Roberts answered with goals in the 37th and 49th minute to take a 2-1 lead. Salinas netted the equalizer from eight yards out off an assist from Tyra Markey in the 55th minute. With 13 minutes left to play, Michaela Cody found the back of the net off a deflection in the box for her first career goal and the game-winner.
