Overtime Goal Pushes Drake Past Western Illinois, 1-0

Leathernecks return to action Saturday, October 17, for Summit League contest against Eastern Illinois

MACOMB, Ill. – A goal with less than two minutes remaining in the first overtime period was the difference-maker Tuesday (Oct. 13) evening, as the Drake Bulldogs edged the Western Illinois Leathernecks by a final score of 1-0. The Leathernecks, who entered Tuesday's nonconference tilt on a two-game winning streak, dropped to 4-8-1 on the season while Drake moved to 9-3 on the season.

"The last three games we have made a little bit of a push, so I think it could happen for us," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Drake is one of the better teams we have played record-wise, they've beaten some good teams, and the second half was in our favor. I thought we were pretty good in the second half. So I think we are making strides. I was pleased with our effort. I thought we ran more, thought we defended pretty well. We are disappointed because we didn't make enough plays."

Drake's Steven Enna was in the right place at the right time with 1:24 remaining in the first overtime period, as he collected a loose ball in the box and found the back of the net. Enna's goal followed a Bulldog corner kick that was mishandled inside the box, resulting in Enna's third goal of the season.

Following a first half which featured only four total shots and a save a piece by each goalie, the second half featured scoring chances for both sides.

Western had a pair prime opportunities to strike in the second half, less than two minutes apart from each other. Diego Lopez had the first chance to strike in the 80th minute, as Western looked to break a scoreless draw. Armel Kouassi found the ball at his foot and flicked it on to Lopez just outside the box. Two touches later, Lopez ripped a shot inside the box, but it sailed just wide of target.

Two minutes later, Austin Gochneaur looked like he had put the Purple and Gold on top of the Bulldogs, as he connected on a header inside the box. His deflected was on target, but was punched just above the crossbar by the Bulldog keeper.

Bruce Corrie, the reigning Summit League Defensive Player of the Week, was called upon to record four saves on the afternoon including three in the action-packed second half.

The Leathernecks, who ended Omaha's nation-leading 12-match home winning streak their last time in Summit League competition, return to league action this Saturday, October 17. Western Illinois welcomes instate rival, and Summit League foe, Eastern Illinois to Macomb for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
