Women's Golf Signee Mariah Peters Earns Kenneth Smith Award

The annual honor is reserved for the Kansas City area golfer who best demonstrated excellence on the golf course, in the classroom and through community service

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois women's golf signee Mariah Peters (Blue Springs, Mo./Blue Springs) was recently named the 2014-15 Kenneth Smith Award winner, which recognizes the top female high school golfer in the Kansas City Metro area. The award honors a player that best demonstrates excellence in the areas of performance on the course, academic achievement and leadership on their team and in the community. Peters will begin her career at WIU next fall.

"Mariah is much more than just a very talented golfer," said head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen. "Her outstanding academics and commitment to service epitomize our Core Values at WIU. We are proud of her and excited to have her be an integral part of our program."

Peters won 17 tournament titles during her high school career highlighted by her recent MSHSAA Class 2 State Championship. She was the first person in her school's history to win an individual girls golf state championship. She has also been tabbed all-state four times, tallied two conference crowns (2012, 2014), three district titles (2011, 2013, 2014) and three section championships (2011, 2012, 2014). Peters helped Blue Spring High School earn the 2012 conference title which was the program's first ever. Among several individual honors, Peters was named the Midwest PGA Section 'Player of the Year' as a junior in 2013. She also holds her schools 18-hole record of 71 (-1).

The Western Illinois 2014-15 women's golf team begins its spring season on March 10 with the Dr. Donnis Thomspon Invitational on Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
