Hollopeter and Rosenhauer Claim Event Wins in Dual Meet

Western Illinois lost to Omaha in the final home meet of the 2014-15 season.

MACOMB, Ill. - Lizzie Hollopeter and Sarah Rosenhauer won the 100 Back and 100 Breast, respectively, to begin the dual meet against Omaha on Friday (Jan. 23). Western Illinois fell to Omaha 186.5 -76.5 to close out the home schedule.

"We're seeing a lot of fast times and smarter swims out of a lot of our girls." said head coach Greg Naumann. "That's what we see at this point of the year. People swim smarter and start to feel a lot better. The season's training load is getting to be a lot lighter and more speed based. So they're more refreshed as we get through these next couple of meets. Every meet we go, we're just trying to push harder and harder and finish stronger and stronger."

Hollopeter fell just short of a season-best time in her 100 Back victory, with Taylor Winkel claiming third place. Hollopeter would later take home her second event win of the evening, finishing the 200 Back in 2:11.17, four seconds faster than the second place finisher.

Rosenhauer claimed the 100 Breast, touching out in 1:10.17. The junior was later edged out by Hannah Fisher in the 200 IM. Fisher finished in fifth while Rosenhauer finished sixth. Fisher's time of 2:23.33 is an in-season best. The freshman later added a third place finish in the 500 Free.

Two events later, Andie Villez touched the wall in third place for the Leathernecks in the 1000 Free. Villez also finished fifth in the 500 Free and third in the 200 Breast.

Julia Rasmussen finished the 50 Free in 25.20, good for second place, while Michele Wasta and Allison DeWane finished fith and sixth, respectively. Moments before, Rasmussen claimed second place in the 1 Meter competition, finishing with a final tally of 214.73, four points off her season-high. Melanie Pearson finished fourth in the 1 Meter with a final score of 196.81.

The Leathernecks concluded the day with a second place finish in the 200 Free Relay. Western's team of Hollopeter, DeWane, Fisher and Rasmussen ended the relay in 1:44.21.

Both the men's and women's teams will be back in action on January 31 against Saint Louis. The meet is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.

"We've seen Saint Louis quite a few times and it's always been how far can we bridge the gap from the first time to the end of the year. A lot of the time we've been able to get that gap closer as the years have gone on," Naumann added.
