Leathernecks Fall Short Against Green Bay

Men's soccer lost 1-0 to Green Bay on Sunday (Sept. 7)

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois men's soccer (1-3) played their 2014 home opener on Sunday (Sept. 7) against the Green Bay Phoenix (2-2) and lost a close decision 1-0. The defeat comes on the tail of a closely contested 1-0 loss at No. 8 Creighton (4-0) on Friday (Sept. 5).

"We definitely have some things to work on and the game shows us that, especially when we play good teams," said Leatherneck head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "Yves (Dietrich) made some critical saves and the goal on the break away is obviously not what we wanted, but we just have to get better and improve as the season moves on."

The Leathernecks came out firing early against the Phoenix as sophomore Drew Whalen ripped off a point blank attempt in the 8th minute. Western kept up the pressure with eight first half shots (three on goal). However, three Green Bay saves would keep the Purple and Gold off the board as the Phoenix notched seven attempts (four on goal) of their own. Senior captain Yves Dietrich's four saves would keep the score tied at zero after 45 minutes of play.

The second half would open with Green Bay on the offensive as the Phoenix tallied two shot attempts in the first five minutes of the half, with the second shot glancing off the post. Both teams exchanged volleys until the 70th minute when the Phoenix struck off of a counter attack resulting from a failed Western free kick. The initial attempt was broken up in the box, however, Green Bay's Lawrence Talery was there to cross the ball into Audi Jepson who knocked it home.

Jepson's goal would prove to be the game-winner despite a late Leatherneck barrage including a headed attempt from the goalkeeper Dietrich; the first shot attempt of his career. The Purple and Gold ended up outshooting the Phoenix 13-12 with both goalkeepers making five saves each. WIU's attack was led by senior's Charlie Bales and Mario Alvarez with both taking four shots each. Bales' three shots on goal are a season high for the defender. Alvarez's lone shot on goal came in the 89th minute and was blocked by a Phoenix defender.

Western will travel to High Point, North Carolina on Friday (Sept. 12) for the 2014 High Point Plaza Classic and a first day matchup against Radford University. A weekend preview and game notes will be available on GoLeathernecks.com later this week. Fans can also follow Western Illinois men's soccer on Twitter @WIUMensSoccer.
