Leathernecks battle Radford to 2-2 draw.

Western opened the High Point Plaza Classic with a double overtime tie

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Western Illinois men's soccer opened up the 2014 High Point Classic in High Point, North Carolina with a double overtime 2-2 draw against the Highlanders of Radford University. The tie moves WIU to an overall record of 1-3-1 in 2014.

"We created quality chances and finally scored, so that was a positive," said Leatherneck head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "It's too bad we were poor defensively and allowed Radford back in twice. They had good energy in the second half and turned up the pressure. We are pleased, but still need to get better in all facets of the game."

The opening 45 minutes were all Western as the Leathernecks outshot Raford 8-2. WIU's efforts on offense were rewarded in the 43rd minute when Jacob Bevan struck on a Charlie Bales assist off of a rebound. Bevan's goal would propel the Purple and Gold into a 1-0 halftime lead.

The second half saw the Highlander's step up the offensive pressure as they outshot Western 14-7 scoring in the 68th and 79th minute. Senior captain Charlie Bales would strike for the the Leathernecks in the 76th minute for the go ahead goal described as "The best goal I have ever seen in my five years with Western Illinois men's soccer," by Leatherneck assistant coach Dan Lewis on Twitter off of a Western free kick from 25 yards out. WIU's lead would not hold after the Highlander's struck in the 79th minute.

Two overtime periods of ten minutes apiece would result in no goals for either team as the Leathernecks would go on to rip off 16 shots, two less than Radford's 18. Western was led by goal scorer Charlie Bales with three shots and five other Leathernecks recording two shots each.

Western senior goalkeeper Yves Dietrich recorded four more saves in the match, bringing his season total to 26. Radford's two goals in 90 minutes marks the first time in 2014 that Dietrich has allowed more than one goal in regulation.

The Purple and Gold close out their appearance at the 2014 High Point Plaza Classic on Sunday (Sept. 14) against the host Panthers of High Point at 2 p.m. (CT). Fans can follow the live stats for Sunday's contest HERE or watch the live video stream on the Big South Network HERE.
