THE GAME: Western Illinois opens Missouri Valley Football Conference play on the road against Southern Illinois... This opener is just the second time in the last six seasons Western opened MVFC play on the road... Both programs are coming off losses at Big Ten opponents.

SERIES: Western and Southern meet for the 60th time... WIU owns a 34-21-4 edge in the series all-time... Western will look to end a two-game losing streak to the Salukis and in the process win in Carbondale for the first time since 2000 (47-17 victory, six losses).

THE COACHES: WIU head coach Bob Nielson enters his second year with the Leathernecks. He owns a 6-10 record at Western and 176-69-1 in his 22nd year as a head coach... Southern Illinois head coach Dale Lennon owns a 45-29 record in his seventh year at SIU and is 147-62 overall in his 18th year as a head coach.

SCOUTING THE SALUKIS: Southern Illinois enters the game nationally-ranked at 3-1, with the only defeat at Purdue... Southern ranks fourth nationally averaging 58 percent success on third down... The team is 19th in passing completion percentage (.646), 20th in first downs (88), sixth in fumble recoveries (6) and fifth in punt return defense (0.0 ypr)... SIU also ranks sixth in the country averaging a MVFC-leading 3.75 sacks per game... Malcolm Agnew is 19th in the country but only third in the league rushing for 161.3 yards per game. His 12.0 point per game average leads the league and ranks third nationally... Mark Iannotti stands 20th nationally completing 64.7 percent of his passes. His 10 TD passes are the second-highest total in the country, and his 17 points responsible for per game ranks him 13th... MyCole Pruitt leads the MVFC with three touchdown receptions, 12th in the country.

LEATHERNECKS IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: Western ranks among the 'Top 25' nationally in several categories... The offense is 23rd in completion percentage (.636), 6th in TFL allowed (3.50), and 30th in first down offense (82)... The defense is 29th in third down percentage defense (.323), 27th in rushing defense (124.0), 27th in scoring defense (20.0 ppg), and 18th in redzone defense (.647)... On special teams, Western stands 30th in kick return defense (16.47 yards allowed)... Trenton Norvell stands 22nd nationally in completion percentage (.642), 29th in passing efficiency (138.8), 22nd in passing touchdowns (6), and passing yards per game (231.3)... Brad Blumenshine is one of 24 players nationally with a punt return for a touchdown... Hi-C Scott ranks 29th in punt returns (9.6)... Jean-Marc Charles, Kevin Kintzel and Mick Nelson are tied for 18th nationally with a fumble recovery.

DAVIS ENTERS ANOTHER TOP 10: Martinez Davis joined another WIU career 'Top 10' listing during the Northwestern game. He was credited with a pass break-up, the 18th of his career, and moved into a three-way tie for 10th place all-time... Davis is tied with Donnie Caldwell and former NFL standout (and Super Bowl champion) Rodney Harrison... He's two away from Derrick Varnado for ninth place.

100 CAREER TACKLES: Seven current Leathernecks have eclipsed 100 career tackles and are on the verge of 200-plus... J.J. Raffelson (193) and Jonathon Rollins (192) could both break the 200 mark this weekend... Seniors David McDaniel (165), Kevin Kintzel (145), Luke Venegoni (131), Gino Durley, Jr. (126) and Martinez Davis (122) round out the list.

NORVELL THREATENED RECORD: Trenton Norvell made a run at the Western single-game completions record at Northwestern. The sophomore completed 29-of-49 passes, falling three shy of the mark set by Paul Singer on two different occasions... Norvell nearly became the first Leatherneck since 2001 (Sam Clemons) to complete 30 passes in a game, and he was eight yards shy of his second career 300-yard passing game.

IN THE CAREER TOP 10 AS A SOPHOMORE: During his performance at Northwestern, Trenton Norvell broke into the WIU career 'Top 10' for most pass completions. He increased his career total to 272, moving past Mark Bloom and Donny Simmons for ninth place all-time... Norvell is 12 away from Mark Zanders for eighth place.

NORVELL REPRESENTING WIU IN THE LEADERS: Trenton Norvell ranks 22nd nationally in touchdown passes (6). He's 29th in passing efficiency (138.8), 26th in passing yards per game (231.3), and 50th in passing yards per completion (12.0)... Norvell enters this week 40th in total offense (232.3).

LENOIR SETS CAREER-HIGHS TOO: Lance Lenoir, Jr. joined Trenton Norvell in a career-high day at Northwestern. The sophomore wide receiver caught 11 passes for 115 yards against the Wildcats, setting a personal-best in both categories... Lenoir notched his second career 100-yard receiving game.
