Leathernecks Down Spartans in Peoria

Dietrich, Fiddes, and Kouassi named to All-Tournament Team.

PEORIA, Ill. - Western Illinois men's soccer withstood high heat and humidity to claim their first win of the season on Sunday (Aug. 31) as they defeated the Spartans of San Jose State 1-0 in Peoria, Ill. at the Hotels at Grand Prairie Classic hosted by Bradley.

The game winner came off the head of freshman Armel Kouassi in the 9th minute as Tyler Chavez and Peoria native Ben Fiddes combined on the assist.
Both Fiddes (2 assists) and Kouassi (2 goals) were honored for their offensive efforts on the weekend as they were named to the all-tournament team. Goalkeeper Yves Dietrich's nine saves over two games also earned the senior a spot on the all-tournament team

"We put together a great team effort on a hot day," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "We defended with both brains and heart. Chavez, Fiddes and Kouassi put together a very nice goal, and Yves was solid in the net."

The Leathernecks came out firing in the first half and struck early. Kouassi's goal in the 9th minute was the freshman's second goal in as many games as well as in his career. Fiddes's assist brought the sophomore's season total to two, already matching his 2013 assist mark. The Purple and Gold kept the pressure on throughout the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Spartans 6-2.

In the second half San Jose State brought an offensive barrage of their own as they fired off 10 shots, four going on goal in the final 45'. However, senior goalkeeper Yves Dietrich and the Leatherneck defense stood strong as Dietrich made six saves in the game to earn the win and the shutout, his first of the year. Senior midfielder Mario Alvarez led the team with three shots in the game while defender Charlie Bales and forward Diego Lopez notched two shots of their own.

Western will take the week off from competition before traveling to Omaha, Neb. next Friday (Sept. 5) to take on Creighton at 7 p.m.

A game preview for the Creighton match will be available midweek on GoLeathernecks.com. Fans can also follow Leatherneck men's soccer on twitter @WIUMensSoccer.
