THE GAME: Western Illinois begins a two-game road trip to the state of South Dakota, first facing the Coyotes of the University of South Dakota... The Leathernecks are looking to improve to 2-2 all-time in November under head coach Bob Nielson... The game also ends a five-game streak versus nationally-ranked opponents... Western recorded wins in each of the last two years when coming off a bye week, including a 2012 win at USD.

SERIES: The series is tied 2-2... The Fighting Leathernecks own a two-game win streak versus USD, both coming since the Coyotes joined the Missouri Valley Football Conference.

THE COACHES: WIU head coach Bob Nielson enters his second year with the Leathernecks. He owns a 7-14 record at Western and 177-73-1 in his 22nd year as a head coach...  South Dakota head coach Joe Glenn is 7-25 in his third year at USD, and 195-125-1 in his 27th year overall.

SCOUTING THE COYOTES: South Dakota could not hold off Youngstown State in the fourth quarter, allowing 21 points over the final 15 minutes, in a 28-17 defeat to the 13th-ranked Penguins... Jasper Sanders led the ground game with 105 rushing yards... Kevin Earl completed 14-of-30 passes for 151 yards, a touchdown and one interception... Miles Bergner averaged 45.7 yards on 10 punts, including a long of 69 yards, and also booted a 50-yard field goal early in the third quarter... John Wessel had a game-high 10 tackles and an interception... Jacob Warner and Tyson Graham recorded eight tackles each... USD ranks 18th nationally averaging just 5.2 penalties per game... The Coyotes lead the MVFC allowing just 18.8 yards per kickoff return... The offefnse is second in the league and 15th nationally scoring at a 89.3 percent success rate in the redzone... Graham stands second in the MVFC and 44th nationally averaging 8.9 tackles.

ONE OF THE TOUGHEST SCHEDULES AROUND: Western enters this weekend with the 10th-toughest schedule in the country, based on cumulative opposition winning percentage... The Fighting Leathernecks have played two Big Ten Conference teams and are coming off a stretch playing five games against a ranked opponent... Two of the three future opponents are ranked in the nation's 'Top 25' poll: South Dakota State and Indiana State... Based off past opposition, Western stands seventh nationally in toughest schedule.

VALLEY FOOTBALL > FBS: According to the latest Sagarin rankings, the Missouri Valley Football Conference ranks ahead of THREE Division I Football Subdivision Conferences and half of a fourth... The MVFC (62.76) enters this week in front of the: Mountain West-West Division (61.31), Mid-America-West (61.03), Conference-USA West (60.26), Conference-USA East (59.08), Sun Belt (56.29), and Mid-America East (53.61) Conferences... The MVFC is 2-10 versus the FBS, but of those 10 losses nine came against teams from the 'Power 5' Conferences. The only non-Power 5 loss was UNI flying across the Pacific Ocean to play at Hawai'i... Overall the MVFC owns a 28-11 record out-of-conference.

KINTZEL AGAIN LEADS THE VALLEY: Kevin Kintzel enters this week averaging a MVFC-leading 9.0 tackles per game (40th nationally)... His career-high 16 tackles against North Dakota State were the most by a Leatherneck since the 2010 postseason (Kyle Glazier-17 at Coastal Carolina).

McDANIEL EARNS SECOND STRAIGHT CFPA HONOR: David McDaniel picked up his second straight Honorable Mention selection from the College Football Performance Awards following the Northern Iowa game... McDaniel blocked two punts in the contest, broke up a pass and recorded two tackles.

McDANIEL IN ELITE COMPANY: When David McDaniel got his hands on two Northern Iowa punts, he joined an elite group of Leathernecks all-time... His two blocked kicks marked just the third time ever a Western player accomplished that feat... NFL Pro Bowler Bryan Cox blocked two punts at Montana State in September 1990, and Anthony D'Astice blocked two Missouri State punts in October 2007... McDaniel moved into a tie for second place among the season 'Top 10' leaders in blocked kicks (now with 3) and a tie for second all-time with four blocks.

BAKER AMONG RUSHING LEADERS: Senior J.C. Baker ranks 27th nationally averaging 98.6 rushing yards per game (14th with 887 yards)... His 117.2 all-purpose yards per game is 54th nationally... In 21 career games as a Leatherneck, Baker has racked up 2,036 rushing yards, good to overtake 10th place on the all-time list.

IN THE CAREER TOP 10 AS A SOPHOMORE: Just 21 games into his Western Illinois career, Trenton Norvell broke into the WIU career 'Top 10' in four categories... He enters this week ranked sixth in career completions (363), sixth in attempts (677) and eighth in passing touchdowns (31)... Norvell also overtook seventh place all-time in passing yards (4,315 yards), and eighth in total offense (4,434)... He now owns three career 300-yard passing games, two of those coming in consecutive weeks (310 yards vs. Illinois State and Northern Iowa).

SIXTH 100 AND APPROACHING THE RECORDS: Lance Lenoir, Jr. picked up his sixth career 100-yard receiving game (vs. Northern Iowa), and continues to climb up the career receiving leaders chart... Lenoir became the 26th player in program history to record 1,000 receiving yards and now is tied for 16th all-time with 1,298 yards in 21 games.

SCOTT SHOWING CONSISTENCY: Hi-C Scott joined the Leathernecks last year, and in 21 career games he has caught at least one pass in each contest... Scott moved into sixth place all-time in the category, but with only three regular season games remaining, WIU would need to advance to the postseason for Scott to catch the three-way tie for third place (25).

KNUFFMAN IN CAREER LISTING: Sophomore Nathan Knuffman moved into 10th place in three career 'Top 10' listings... He moved into a five-way tie for eighth place in field goals (11), tied for ninth in extra points (53) and holds sole possession of ninth place in scoring among kickers (86).
