UIC Flames Down Leatherneck Men's Basketball in Chicago

Western Illinois cut its nine-point deficit to one late in the second half, but UIC was able to hold on and defeat the Leathernecks in Chicago, 67-64

CHICAGO – The Fighting Leathernecks cut their nine-point deficit to one late in regulation Monday night (Nov. 17), but the UIC Flames were able to hold on to their lead and defeat Western Illinois, 67-64, in Chicago.
 
WIU falls to 0-2 on the season after the loss while UIC improves to 1-1.
 
Junior J.C. Fuller led the Leathernecks in scoring with 14, and added five rounds, four assists and a block to his stat line.
 
Recording a career-best nine assists was sophomore Garret Covington. The Edwardsville, Ill. native also scored seven points, had two steals and only turned the ball over once.
 
Junior Jalen Chapman, who played his first game as a Leatherneck, notched eight points and six rebounds. Senior Mohamed Conde also pulled down six boards in the contest to go along with his six points, two steals, one block and one assist.
 
Others players who scored for WIU were Jamie Batish (9), Jabari Sandifer (7), Mike Miklusak (7), Dalan Ancrum (3), Remy Roberts-Burnett (2) and Tate Stensgaard (1).
 
The opening half was a back-and-forth affair with neither team gaining more than a five-point lead. The Leathernecks largest advantage came at the 12:18 mark when they led by four, and the Flames biggest lead came with 6:33 to play in the first, a five-point advantage. There were a total of three lead changes and five ties throughout the period.
 
The Leathernecks outscored the Flames 10-5 to open the second half, but UIC responded by outscoring WIU 21-7 up until the four-minute mark of the second. Western was able to cut the Flames' advantage to one point with 20 seconds to play, but UIC was able to connect on its free throws late to close out the game with a 67-64 win.
 
As a team WIU committed 25 fouls to UIC's 12, and both teams finished with 11 turnovers.
 
The Leathernecks did record 20 assists on 24 made field goals.
 
UIC was led by junior center Jake Wiegand who finished with 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.
 
Western Illinois is back in action Saturday in Macomb when they play host to Southeastern Louisiana at 7 p.m.
