Leathernecks Extend Winning Streak to Four in 2-0 win over Milwaukee

Charlie Bales and Jacob Bevan both scored for Western in the midweek match on Tuesday (Oct. 7).

MACOMB, Ill. - Charlie Bales gave Western the lead and Jacob Bevan sealed the win in the Leathernecks 2-0 triumph over Milwaukee on Tuesday, October 7 in Macomb, Illinois. The win marks four straight victories and five wins in last six games for the Purple and Gold.

"It was obviously a slow start for us in the first half. Players had been sitting in class all day and our mentality was not good for the first 20 minutes," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "My mindset is that every game is critical, and it is important to convince the players of the same thing for a match in the middle of the week that is sandwiched between two conference games. After the first 20 minutes we did better, and the second half I thought was much better."

Western and Milwaukee both came out of the gate fast in the first half as both teams combined for a total of seven shots in the first 15 minutes, including a Charlie Bales free kick from 75 yards out that was carried by the wind and eventually saved by UWM goalkeeper, Liam Anderson. The action that followed was highlighted by physical play as the Leathernecks were whistled for eight fouls to the Panther's three. The final five minutes of the opening period saw four shots and four saves between the two teams, but no goals, as halftime would hit with the score tied at zero.

The second half would open with more physical play from the Leathernecks, and an offensive barrage from Milwaukee, as Western notched three quick fouls and UWM tallied three shots and two corner kicks. However, a series of substitutions by coach Johnson would give WIU fresh legs and a renewed offensive effort as sharp combination passing and long possessions allowed Western to tally up three shots and one corner kick of their own.

In the 70th minute, the Leatherneck's persistence paid off as junior midfielder Maclean Johnson was taken down in the penalty area and WIU was awarded a penalty kick. Senior captain Charlie Bales stepped to the spot for the Purple and Gold and delivered on his fourth penalty kick in three consecutive games to put Western up 1-0.

Western continued to keep the pressure on Milwaukee in the final 20 minutes, and with less than sixty seconds remaining, the Leathernecks would strike again. This time it would be sophomore Jacob Bevan delivering a header off of a Mario Alvarez cross from an Austin Gochneaur pass for Bevan's third goal this season. The sophomore's strike would prove to be the final nail as the clock would hit 90' with the score sitting 2-0 in Western's favor.

In addition to his goal, Charlie Bales notched a season high five shots, with four going on goal, while senior goalkeeper, and captain, Yves Dietrich would notch his fourth straight shutout, and fifth overall this season.

The Leathernecks continue their four-game homestand this Saturday, October 11 against Summit League rival Omaha at 1 p.m. (CT) on John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Illinois.
