Men's Soccer Continues Unbeaten Streak at IUPUI

Western Illinois battled IUPUI to a 1-1 draw on Saturday (Oct. 25) in Indianapolis, Ind.

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - A record-tying performance from Mario Alvarez, an Austin Gochneaur goal, and four saves from Yves Dietrich led Western Illinois to it's second consecutive draw and third this season in a 1-1 match against IUPUI on Saturday, October 25. Saturday's match extends Western's unbeaten streak to eight straight games and leaves the Leathernecks undefeated in Summit League play with a record of 3-0-1, 8-4-3 overall.

"We had a great effort tonight to come back from a goal down," said head coach Dr. Eric Johnson. "We were sharp all over the pitch, except in the last few yards and the final touch. We will take the draw and move on to our next game versus Oral Roberts."

Western dominated the opening 15 minutes as it tallied five shots, three on goal, and notched three corner kicks to the Jaguars lone shot and corner kick. However, in the 17th minute, IUPUI would change the entire complexion of the game on a Uriel Macias goal with the help of Ben Ogedegbe and Emmanuel Usen on the assist. The tally would mark the only first-half goal WIU has surrendered since its season opener against UNLV on August 29.

As the half continued, the rate of shots taken would drop and the number of fouls would rise dramatically as four yellow cards were issued before the end of the half. Despite a late shot on goal from Mario Alvarez the opening 45 minutes would close with IUPUI still leading, 1-0.

Western's opening minutes of the second half would not feature a barrage of shots like the first half, but in the 58th minute, the Leathernecks would find what they were looking for in an Austin Gochneaur equalizer off of a Ben Fiddes Assist. Gochenaur's goal was the junior's third of the season and Fiddes' assist would mark three total for the sophomore. The WIU pressure would continue as the Purple and Gold fired off 13 second half shots. However, regulation would come to a close with the score still knotted at one.

In overtime, the Leathernecks would outshoot the Jaguars 9-5 with four of the attempts coming from Mario Alvarez. Western would limit IUPUI to just one shot on goal, but in the end, the clock would expire with neither team notching a goal and both teams earning one point in the draw.

While Gochenaur's goal led the scoring for Western, Mario Alvarez led the overall attack as the senior midfielder would take 10 total shots with five going on goal. Alvarez's effort ties the all-time record for shots in a game in Western History. The squad, as a whole, took 30 total shots which ranks third in program history for total team shots in a game. Other offensive leaders for the Purple and Gold included Charlie Bales and Jacob Bevan who each took four shots while Yves Dietrich anchored the defensive line with one goal allowed on four saves.

Thanks to an Omaha win over Denver on Saturday evening (Oct. 25), Western now sits as the lone unbeaten team in the Summit League. The Leathernecks attention now shifts to their upcoming match with Oral Roberts. The game is scheduled next Saturday (Nov. 1) and is slated for a 1 p.m. (CT) start on John MacKenzie Alumni Field in Macomb, Illinois.
