OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -
In what head coach Mel Blasi labeled some of the worst weather conditions the team has faced this fall, Fighting Leatherneck senior golfer Nate Davis battled through the adversity and finished in the 'Top 5' of the 2014 Bill Ross Intercollegiate field. The two-day, Kansas City hosted event was shortened from 54 to 36 holes due to rain and was played at the Milburn Country Club.

Davis, who has finished in the 'Top 10' in three of the Leathernecks' four fall events, finished third overall with a 147 (+3) after carding a 74 in round one before firing a 73 during the second 18 holes. The senior had six total birdies and shot an even par on 22 holes. It's the best finish for Davis this fall, and marks the second time he's finished in the 'Top 5'.

"Nate (Davis) had an outstanding tournament in some of the worst weather conditions we've played in this fall," said head coach Mel Blasi. "The wind, rain and chilly weather created an extremely difficult golf course, and Nate played nearly flawless golf in a very good field of competition."

The rest of the team seemed to struggle in the poor weather as sophomore Andrew Blackburn finished second on the team with a 160, placed tied for 54th overall. Blackburn tallied an 80 in each round.

Junior Alex Templin finished in 72nd with a 164 after recording scores of 86 and 78. One stroke behind Templin was Austin Van Alst who shot a 164 (82-83).

Freshman Sean Miller had an 89 in the opening round before carding an 83. His total score of 172 placed him in 81st.

"As a team we have really struggled to find any consistency. A lack of experience and poor weather has really hurt our team scores. In each tournament so far we have had outstanding individual performances but not much to show for them on the team side of things," concluded Blasi.

Western wraps up its fall season next Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 20-21) with the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate (Hosted by Austin Peay) in Hopkinsville, Ky. on The Links at Novadell.
