Leathernecks Conclude Mission Inn Spring Spectacular in 14th

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - The Fighting Leathernecks wrapped-up play in the 2013 Mission Inn Spring Spectacular Sunday (March 17) with a 14-place finish out of 18 teams after carding a three-round score of 931 (313, 306, 312).

"We showed some glimpses of really good play in this tournament," said head coach Mel Blasi. "Both Nate Davis and Ben Kilborn were very solid and had stretches where they played really well. Plus Matt Calder, who golfed as an individual, had an excellent second round with a team-best 72. We are looking forward to our home tournament and the rest of our spring season. Our best golf is ahead of us."

Taking home the top spot was Indiana who finished with a 869 (292, 286, 291), while Purdue and Virgina Tech tied for second-place with an 871.

The top individual golfers were Georgia State's Jonathan Grey who finished with a first-place score of 208 (70, 71, 67), Indiana's Brant Peaper who tallied a second-place score of 213 (72 72 69), and Scott Vincent of Virginia Tech who carded a 214 (71, 73, 70).

The only Leathernecks to score under 80 in every round was Nate Davis who led the Leathernecks with a score of 226, and tied for a 35th-place finish. Davis finished the first round with a 77, then carded a 73 in the second round before concluding the event with a 76.

Right behind Davis with a three-round score of 229 and tied for 47th was Ben Kilborn. Kilborn improved on his score with each round played, beginning with an 80 in round one, then a 75 in the second round, and finishing play up with a 74 in the final round.

Carson Baugher tied for 97th with a score of 242 (78, 80, 84), Dan Bidle carded a 244 (78, 84, 82) and finished tied for 130th, and Peter McKenzie tied for 112th with a score of 249 (91, 78, 80).

Golfing as an individual was Matt Calder who finished tied for 67th with a three-round score of 235 (80, 72, 83).

The men's golf team takes a couple weeks off before it plays host to its only home meet of the year, the Beu Mussatto Invitational on March 29-30.
