The Redbirds (6-2) had 57 kills and just 14 attack errors against the Fighting Leathernecks (6-3), who compiled 44 kills on the night. Western Illinois hit over .300 in two sets and convincingly won the third frame but Illinois State's balanced offensive attack ultimately decided the match.
Senior Cait Egan led Western Illinois offensively with 12 kills on 27 attempts (.370 attack percentage.) Egan had six kills in the fourth set and also recorded her 70th career solo block, which moves her past Laura Olson (1988-92) for sole possession of fifth place in program history. Egan now leads the squad with 83 kills (2.44 per set) and 99 total points this season.
Freshman outside hitter Ann Miller continues to impress as the Davenport, Iowa native collected her team-high fourth double-double with 10 kills and 14 digs. Miller had five kills in the third set victory and has been in double-digit digs in every match this season.
Sophomore setter Sarah Fetter, who transferred from Illinois State over the summer, collected 32 assists, eight digs, two kills and two service aces against her former team. Fetter, who has dished out 30-plus assists in every match this season, had 13 assists in the fourth set.
Junior libero Bridget Murphy, MVP of the Drury Inn/ASICS Challenge over the weekend, compiled 13 digs while freshman Molly Murphy had 10 digs and one service ace. Molly Murphy's ace in the fourth set is her team-high 14th of the season, which also leads all Summit League competitors. Â
