Men's Basketball Wraps Up Season Against Savannah State

MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois men's basketball will look to end the 2010-11 season on a high note when the Leathernecks play host to Savannah State on Tuesday night (March 1). The season finale is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.

MIMS, LANDER HONORED PREGAME: Western Illinois Athletics will recognize two seniors playing their final game in a Leatherneck uniform... These two have been great ambassadors to the men's basketball program, Leatherneck Athletics and Western Illinois University.

#10 Arsenio Mims... a four-year letterwinner Mims first joined the Leathernecks as a walk-on and developed into one of the leaders both on and off the court.  Named the Papa John's Scholar-Athlete of the Week yesterday, Mims finish with a career-high in points Saturday at Oral Roberts.

#24 Matt Lander... a transfer last year from John A. Logan, Lander has developed this year into one of the Summit League's most talented all-around players. After averaging 7.7 points a game last year, he has more than doubled that - ranking among the league's 'Top 10' at 17.3 points. Ending his Western Illinois career on a personal-high note, Lander has scored 20 or more points on 10 occasions this season including five times in the month of February.

LANDER ON A TEAR: Senior guard Matt Lander has been making the most of his final month as a Leatherneck. During the month of February (span of eight games), Lander is averaging 20.1 points per game (improving to 17.3 ppg overall)... He scored 20 or more points in five of the eight games, and netted less than 16 just once... Lander matched his then career-high of 24 points on three occasions (Oakland, UMKC and Oral Roberts) but improved on that scoring 26 points against Southern Utah.

FREE THROW LEADERBOARD: Matt Lander moved up the Western Illinois season 'Top 10' free throw leaders... Lander leads the Summit League with 161 free throws in 211 attempts (76.3 percent)... His 161 made currently ranks him sixth on the Western season list, just two shy of fourth... Lander has the second-highest total of Western's Division I era (J.D. Dykstra 163 in 1984-85)... He owns four of the top free throw shooting efforts in the Summit League... Against North Dakota State he converted a career-high 13 shots (14 attempts), putting him in a three-way tie for the individual season-high. Earlier this season Lander made 12 free throws in a win against Centenary, then did again against Southern Utah and most recently at Oral Roberts.

LAST TIME OUT AT SSU: Ceola Clark III scored 22 points and Matt Lander added 15 as Western Illinois held off a late charge by Savannah State to pick up a 59-52 win... Western never trailed since Jack Houpt's 3-pointer gave the Leathernecks a 15-14 lead with 8:49 left in the first half. The lead eventually grew to 10 with two minutes left when Savannah State (1-1) made a charge... Preston Blackmon hit two free throws then Jovonni Shuler nailed a 3-pointer four seconds later, cutting Western's lead to 53-48 with 1:57 left. Jelani Johnson missed a jumper but Kaimarr Price got a key offensive rebound and his putback extended the lead to seven...     Shuler made the second of two free throws with 1:02 remaining, then Clark committed a turnover to give the ball back. However, Blackmon missed a lay-in and Clark was there for the defensive rebound. Fouled immediately, the junior guard hit both free throws as the Leathernecks converted 5-of-6 at the line in the final 34 seconds to seal the win...       Clark surpassed 20 points for the 10th time of his career on 6-of-11 field goals (4-of-8 beyond the arc) and converting all six free throw attempts... Lander dished out a game-high five assists and Price led in rebounding with five. The Leathernecks shot 60 percent from the field in the second half, 52.8 percent for the game (19-of-36), while holding the Tigers to a 38.6 percent clip.

A WESTERN WIN...: A win by Western would snap the 12-game overall losing streak matching the since the 2006-07 team dropped 12 straight... The 2000-01 squad dropped 16 straight to start the season.

CHANGING UP THE LINE-UP: The Leathernecks rank among the national leaders in different line-ups used as injuries have forced Coach Jim Molinari to use 13 different starting line-ups... The latest came at Oral Roberts when Arsenio Mims, Matt Lander, Kaimarr Price, Jack Houpt and Jelani Johnson... Lander is the only Leatherneck to have started every game this year while Johnson and Houpt have played in every game this season.

TEAM NOTES: Western got out-rebounded by Oral Roberts by 16 last time out (minus-9 on offensive end). That marked the highest deficit this season on the glass... Arsenio Mims scored a career-high six points on 3-of-6 shooting at Oral Roberts. Mims, a team captain who is also the reigning Papa John's Scholar-Athlete of the Week, has played in 16 of his 18 games since the calendar flipped to 2011... Western actually out-shot the Golden Eagles from long distance and had five blocks to ORU's zero... Matt Lander finished Summit League play averaging 17.4 points, followed by Kaimarr Price's 11.3 points. David Gebru averaged 13 points in his two games prior to a season-ending injury... Price scored in double-figures nine of the previous 11 games, and scored at least nine points in 17 of the last 20 games... Price leads the team with three double-doubles and been the top rebounder or shared the honor 19 times this season... The Leathernecks collected eight steals at Oral Roberts, the third-most amount this season. Western recorded nine steals against St. Francis and Culver-Stockton.

SCOUTING THE TIGERS: Savannah State captured its third straight win, now having won eight of its last nine contests... The loss to Western in game of the season started a 13-game losing streak and 17-of-18 prior to the current winning trend... Twice SSU scored 100-plus points in this span but both against non-Division I competition... Jovonni Shuler leads the scoring attack at 18.2 points per game while hitting 74 shots from 3-point range... Jyles Smith averages 7.0 rebounds per game and recorded 65 of the team's 96 blocks... Four Tigers have recorded 30 or more steals.
