MACOMB, Ill. - Western Illinois Swimming & Diving continues to build towards the Summit League Championships in February. Their latest chance to improve was on Saturday as the Redbirds of Illinois State visited campus for an afternoon clash.
The men's program was able to relax and cheer on the women as ISU only fields a women's squad. The Redbirds will return to Normal with a 210-70 victory.
"We had a tough turn turn around for the women's team getting off the bus early Saturday morning and then having to get up and swim, said head coach Greg Nuamann. Allison Calewarts and Alayna Colley had strong swims for this kind of meet overall. Our team did race better today than they did after riding in a bus for seven hours."
Alayna Colley swam well on Saturday as she was able to win the 100-yard Backstroke with a time of 1:02.19. The Macomb native was also able to propel the 200-Yard Freestyle Relay to a first-place finish in 1:47.23. Allison Calewarts, Jessica Schnaiter and Shawn Fitzpatrick also helped the Leathernecks secure the event. In the 100-yard Freestyle, Colley swam to a 2nd place finish with a time of 57.75. In the first event of the day Colley alongside Fitzpatrick, Jamie Grau and Schnaiter captured 2nd place in the 200-yard Medley Relay (1:55.99).
Grau swam at a 1:11.21 clip to finish 2nd in the 100-yard Backstroke and Fitzpatrick did the same in the 200-yard Backstroke in 2:21.02. Brianna Eizenga secured a runner-up spot in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:59.88.
Both the men and women will compete again on Jan. 29 as Milwaukee is the destination. Competition will begin at 1 p.m. at The Klotsche Center Natatorium.
