Leathernecks, Wandrey take wins at Loyola Invitational

SKOKIE, Ill.  — The Western Illinois University women's golf team took the team title and junior Lindsay Wandrey earned medalist honors at the Loyola Invitational, which concluded Monday, April 12.

Wandrey shot a season-best tying round of 74 in the final round to earn her first career win with a  two-round total of 150 at the Evanston Golf Club.

“Lindsay kind of broke through last weekend and had a good round,” Western Illinois coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen said. “She has always been a good striker, but she really putted well on both days.”

Wandrey's effort helped Western Illinois to its second team title of the season with a score of 625. The Leathernecks shot 307 during the second round of play, tying their lowest round of the season. This marks the first season in school history in which Western has recorded two team rounds under 310.

“We had kind of a a rough start to the spring, but now we are finally getting our stride,” Biehl Lukkarinen said. “It was good for us to play against really good teams from comparable conferences and come out with a win.”

Also finishing in the top five for Western, junior Claire Gursh shot 157 (81-76) to tie for fourth while Emily Brink (82-77) and Tara Peterman (79-80) both tied for sixth at 159 and Jennifer Holt tied for 19th at 167 (84-83) to round out the team scoring for Western.

Playing as an individual, Alexa Arent shot 160 (80-80) to take 10th place.

Western will enter the 2010 Summit League Women's Golf Championship April 19-20 at The Oaks Country Club in Tulsa Oklahoma playing its best golf of the season.

“Your goal in golf is always to peak at the right time. It seems like we are heading in the right direction,” Biehl Lukkarinen said. “We're hoping we can carry this over into conference.”
