Peterman picks up win, Leathernecks second at Treasure Coast

FT. PIERCE, Fla.  — Western Illinois senior golfer Kyle Peterman shot six-under-par over three rounds to pick up his second career tournament win and lead the Fighting Leathernecks to a second-place finish at the Treasure Coast Classic Wednesday.

After tying a season-best with a four-under-par 67 in Monday's opening round and following with a one-under 70 Tuesday, Peterman entered the final round one stroke ahead of St. Leo's Nick Brothers atop the leaderboard. The Sherman, Ill., native shot two-over-par through the first nine holes of his final round before rallying with three-consecutive birdies on the back nine to card another 70 and finish at 207 for the tournament. He finished four strokes better than the nearest competitor.

“It's nice to see Kyle get a win,” said Western Illinois coach Mel Blasi. “He's been in the top five in every tournament we've played in this year, so it was good for him to get over that hump.”

The Leathernecks shot 858 as a team to finish in the second spot, three strokes behind St. Leo.

“I was pleased that we played well. It was nice to get out and hit our drivers and some of the clubs we haven't been able to get out and use,” Blasi said. “Today and yesterday, I don't feel like we did the little things that it takes to win a tournament. Part of that is not being able to get outside and play as much as we'd like. We're learning and we'll get there soon.”

Behind Peterman, senior Jake Weeber finished the tournament in seventh with an even-par 69-70-74—213 for the Leathernecks. Rounding out the scoring, senior Brian Scott shot 71-76-73—220 to finish 16th, Ryan Franks shot 79-73-70—222 to tie for 18th and Andrew Godfrey shot 75-76-76—227 to tie for 30th. Playing as an individual, Shane Kwaterski
shot 76-71-84—231 to tie for 34th.

Next up, the Leathernecks compete in the Jackrabbit Invitational March 15-16 in Primm, Nev.
