PRIMM, Nev.  — Western Illinois senior Kyle Peterman shot a four-under-par 68 during the final round of the Jackrabbit Invitational Tuesday to finish the tournament in second place individually.

Peterman entered the second day of the tournament in a tie for third place after posting rounds of 74 and 70 during Monday's rounds. The Sherman, Ill., native hit six birdies in his last round on his way to a three-round total of 212 for his seventh top-5 finish of the 2009-10 season.

“He's playing as well as anyone has ever played at Western. He's on pace to break the single-season scoring record,” Western Illinois coach Mel Blasi said of Peterman. “ He's obviously proven himself to be one of the best players in Division I golf.”

Peterman's effort helped Western to its fifth top-three team finish of the 2009-10 season as the Leathernecks came out with a team score of 883. Nebraska won the tournament with a score of 860 while Arkansas State was second at 875. Nebraska's Brandon Crick was the medalist with a nine-under-par 207.

Western was tied with Summit League foe UMKC for third place after two rounds before having its best score of the tournament with a 228 in the final round to move ahead of the Kangaroos. The Leathernecks finished the highest of the seven Summit League teams in the field.

“This meet was a Summit League preview basically. UMKC has kind of had our number this year. I think this helps our confidence and tells us we are able to compete at the top of the conference,” Blasi said. “But this was just one tournament. It's all about putting it together when it counts.”

Behind Peterman, seniors Brian Scott and Ryan Franks both tied for 18th with scores of 224. Scott's scoring was steady at 76-74-74 while Franks shot rounds of 75 and 77 before capping off the tournament with an even-par 72.

“Ryan has been a bright spot the lineup for us this spring and Brian has just been solid for us all season,” Blasi said.

Rounding out the scoring for the Leathernecks senior Jake Weeber tied for 29th at 227 (74-79-74) and sophomore Andrew Godfrey tied for 65th at 235 (80-75-80). Competing as an individual, senior Shane Kwaterski tied for 71st at 238 (82-79-77).

Western will be back in Macomb, Ill., March 29-30 to host the Beu-Mussatto Invitational at the Harry Mussatto Golf Course.
