DePolo leads Leathernecks over Mercer, 4-0

WOODSTOCK, Ga.- Julie DePolo went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and scored a run to lead the Fighting Leathernecks over Mercer, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.

DePolo hit her first home run of the season in the first inning to give Western (4-2) and early 1-0 lead. In the top of the third, Colleen Biebel started the inning by reaching first base on a bunt. DePolo then drove in Biebel on a double to left field on the next at bat, giving the Leathernecks a two-run advantage over the Bears (3-4).

Western scored two more runs in the top of the seventh on an Erin Schlotfeldt two-RBI double down the left-field line to push the lead to four.

Kamren Ferguson (2-2) picked up the win in the circle, throwing her first shutout of the season. The Clinton, Ill., native thew six strikeouts and only allowed five hits in the victory.

The Leathernecks out hit the Bears by four (9-5), led by DePolo and Schlotfeldt who both recorded two hits. Biebel, Lauren Furgala, Beth Golitko, Lori Pankratz and Alex Pflieger all chipped in one hit each.

The Leathernecks will be back in action at 5 p.m. (CT) against the 2009 Mid-American champions Ball State in their second game of the Phyllis Rafter Memorial Tournament.
